Note from the Principal...We are off to a very good start this year. It is nice having a building that is generally air conditioned properly, especially given our incredible heat. I have been very excited to see the high level of participation by students and parents at pep rallies, volleyball games, and football games. Our teams are very competitive this year and it is nice for the players to have lots of friends and parents in the stands.
I want to encourage all parents to sign up for Family Access. By paying close attention to your student's grades you can get involved early if performance isn't reaching the goals you and your student set for the year. Teachers, counselors, and principals are available to meet with you regarding any concerns you might have about your student's experience at Spring Woods High School, so please don't hesitate to contact us.
Lance Stallworth, Principal Spring Woods High School

SWHS CHOIR NEWS....
The Spring Woods high school choirs have grown in the past year. There are currently four choirs within the program. The goal is the unify all of them so they aren't just four separate choirs; they're a family. To increase the family- like feeling throughout the choirs, the choir counsel has risen in size. In comparison to last years nine officers, this year there are 16 officers that are spread amongst all the choirs.
Another change in numbers this year is the 29 that will be attending district auditions in the hopes of making it all the way to all- state. The students started practicing their music for district this summer. Some went to a camp held at SFA or other universities across Texas and others went to the Spring Branch camp held at Spring Woods. Some even attended both camps.
Along with practicing for district, 18 students will perform at the Texas Renaissance festival this fall with this year being the second time for some. Rehearsals for this started in early September. The students wake up bright and early every Thursday to get to rehearsal at 7:00 am. "I am very excited about performing at the renaissance festival," junior Elleana Smith said. "I love the renaissance and I love choir. It will be very cool to sing there."
The students are very dedicated to choir and look forward to the opportunities and fun to come this school year.
Thanks to last years Booster club members, a huge amount of things were made possible and got accomplished for the choir program. This years Booster club has many things planned and is still welcoming more members.
The goal is to raise the bar every year and the bar was definitely raised last year with the help of new choir director Katy Cuddihee, the Booster club, and the dedication and excitement of students. It's time to raise the bar some more.
-Sam Lopez

On September 20th Tigers For Troops will be assembling packages for mailing to our troops | Tigers for Troops! |
in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is the sixth year that SWHS has participated in this endeavour. Many groups, organizations, and individuals have made these mailings possible, such as: the Tigerettes, softball team, basketball teams, football teams, girls soccer team, Team Leadership classes, environmental science classes, social studies classes, ALAS, HOSA, Student Council, Girl Scouts, Career prep classes, yearbook staff, a group of children from the San Antonio Children's shelter, Sam's Safety, Kroger, Cracker Barrel, and the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW post 8790. Also our own library assistant Ellen Albano makes sure that every year, over 100 packets of hand warmers are sent to our troops. Susan Lowen(past PTA president) and her husband Colin have donated to date more than $1500 toward the efforts to support our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thank you Susan and Colin! Besides monetary donation which is essential to our existence, assistance also comes in the form of helping to pack, donating items for the boxes, purchasing Tigers For Troops T-shirts, baking cookies, and making homemade cards (a favorite among the soldiers). These cards and letters are invaluable, as there is no substitue for the personal touch. Over and over again in their letters of thanks, these young men and women always mention the notes and cards that our students send. Many of our troops do not receive any mail, so for some of them our mail might be the only they receive. We will mail again in Dec., Feb. and May. Dates at this time are not exact. This year we are targeting a group of soldiers in FOB's across Afghanistan who are often without electricity and even running water. We received a call for help from the local VFW and of course must answer that call. We send to other troops as well. If anyone reading this article has a friend or loved one in the military serving overseas in Iraq or Afghanistan and would like to have them included in our mailings, we would be honored to do so. You may call SWHS and ask for Martha Doffing or you can reach me by e-mail at martha.doffing@springbranchisd.com |

| SWHS YEARBOOKS....ORDERS, PHOTOS AND ADS!
Yearbook order forms were placed in all 11th & 12th grade student packets - due to printing costs and budgets, we just put them in these 2 grade levels. I have more in my room, 237, that students can pick up at any time. All orders must be accompanied with payment, either cash or check made out to Spring Woods High School for $60. We also have a layaway program. Students bring $10. by October 31st and then $10. per month to pay off by April. Students must pay each month so as not to have a big payment in the spring. Yearbooks can also be purchased online at www.jostensyearbooks.com and you can pay with a credit card. This should be available by Sept. 1st. Underclass student photos will be taken Oct.24th and 25th. Senior yearbook photos will be taken here on campus on Oct. 26th & 27th. There is a $10. sitting fee which pays for the photographers. They will provide seniors with the Tux jacket, shirt and tie for the boys and the drape for the girls. They also send home picture proofs so that parents and students can see and order prints if they choose to. Seniors and their parents are encouraged to buy senior congratulatory ads in the yearbook. This is when parents can tell their student how proud they are of their accomplishments. There is limited space alloted and it's a first come basis. Cost of the ads, which are full color, are $300. for a full page, $160. for half, and $80. for 1/4 page. We need baby pictures or sports pictures and any ideas of design by Oct. 31st. We need a $25. deposit to hold the space as soon as possible. I also have some yearbooks from last year (2010-2011) available for sale for $50. Previous year's books are available for $30. if available. Call Pam Karter @ 713-251-3239 or email pamela.karter@springbranchisd.com if you have any questions or if you need any forms sent or want to reserve ad space in the yearbook. Thank you, Pam Karter Yearbook, Newspaper & Photography |
