Finding Your Roots: Death, Funeral & Cemetery Records
Finding Your Roots
will be a genealogy workshop for beginners. Representatives from the Historic Riverside Cemetery Conservancy and several of Macon's cemeteries, Washington Library, and Hart's Mortuary will be on hand to teach you about the records of death and what pieces of your family's puzzle those records might hold.
The topic for this session will focus on obituaries, death records, cemetery records and funeral home records. The workshop will offer insights for both African American and Euro-American researchers. This program is funded in part by the City of Macon through the Purchase of Arts Services Grant administered by the Macon Arts Alliance. The Cannonball House and Macon Arts Alliance gratefully acknowledge the support from the City of Macon, Bibb County, and the Georgia Council for the Arts.

Landscape & Nature Spotlight: Magnolia Soulangiana (Japanese or Saucer Magnolia)
The Japanese, or Saucer, Magnolia tree located near the Gate House at Riverside Cemetery has been the object of adoration and curiosity for years. Delicately shading the lot on which the English, Beeks, Solomon, and Hall families are interred, the Magnolia Soulangiana caught the eye of a local physician, Dr. Charles Cotton Harrold, who studied the tree's unique characteristics in the 1940s. He affectionately referred to it as the "'English' specimen." This tree, he noted, "is always late and apparently never touched by cold." He thought this species "valuable."
