Make Way for the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail
Coming this June

Ocmulgee Heritage Trail logo

The Board of Directors of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and NewTown Macon announced the completion of the trail's newest section Monday, February 1, 2010. The levee extension is about a third of a mile long and runs along the levee in Central City Park.

The next phase of the trail will include improvements and extensions through Riverside Cemetery. That work is expected to be complete by June 2010.

Other plans include a pedestrian bridge that crosses the river and connect with trails leading to the Ocmulgee National Monument. For more Trail updates, visit their website.

(Click here for the full article in The Macon Telegraph.)

The Trail's development around Riverside Cemetery will assist the Conservancy in its efforts to preserve, to enhance, and to share. Through educational programs and special community-wide events, the Conservancy invites visitors to enjoy the beauty and rich history of the cemetery. The Conservancy also assists in preserving the cemetery for future generations and for the Macon community-at-large and seeks to provide the community with a tangible connection to its history.
The Perennial Garden Club visits
And so does Gladys Schofield

Schofield Spirits 09

The Perennial Garden Club of Macon enjoyed a guided tour of Riverside Cemetery on March 9, 2010. Their tour traced the route of the Ocmulgee heritage Trail through the cemetery. Their visit included an encounter with landscape architect Gladys Schofield, 1893-1976. She charmed them with stories about the hi-jinks of her high society circle-which included her little dog, Tommy France, who had his own miniature calling cards and she told them why the Schofield sisters were unwelcome next door at Dolly Blount Lamar's after the ADPi 100th anniversary tea. (Hint: this had something to do with the Schofield's yard man being ordered to burn rubber tires on the property line.)The Schofield sisters lived on Georgia Avenue in a home known as Two Magnolias.

Thanks to the Perennial Garden Club!

At the end of the visit, club president Nancy Long presented the Conservancy with a gift of $50. The Conservancy extends its gratitude to the Perennial Garden Club for their generosity!!!

Stories like hers can be heard and seen at this year's Spirits in October. Visit the websiteor call (478) 742-5328 for more information.
