Lisa will speak at South by Southwest (SXSW) on Tuesday, March 13th at 12:30pm at the AT&T Conference Center Salon D, on the topic of Chinese online game operators and the surge of Chinese online games. If you plan to attend SXSW, please contact us to arrange a meeting and we hope to see you in the audience at that session.
At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) last week we observed many Chinese and SE Asian game companies in attendance. There were several companies and government agencies from Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines, as well as representatives of major Chinese online game companies and development studios. There were a few notable presentations regarding China by game companies with China presences such as the9 and PopCap, and there was plenty of chatter about mobile games and social games throughout Asia and Japan. It seems many Western companies are trying to figure out how to succeed in the social and mobile games markets of Asia, perhaps thinking that the regulatory landscape will be more welcoming for them there than it is for PC online games. That said, League of Legends and World of Warcraft are both doing great in China, and Rift and Free Realms are both anticipated to launch later this year.

The PC Gaming Alliance (PCGA), an industry group that was born out of frustration with data that pertained primarily to packaged games and historical sales, released its 2012 report that claimed $18.6 billion in sales of PC games in the US in 2011, and $6 billion in China. Niko would like to add that the two data points are apples and oranges because the US figure includes a large number of packaged games ("single player games") and the China figure is only PC online games. In addition, $6 billion is nearly $1 billion lower than Niko's estimate for the 2011 market size and probably built in a much less detailed manner than Niko's own data. The US estimate for 2015 rises by 37% to $25.5 billion, and Niko's current estimate for China in 2015 is nearly double our estimate for the market in 2011. We will publish our revised 2011-2015e market size data for our clients in April.
