Peoples Daily published an article outlining the 12th Five-Year Plan for China's cultural industry. The Ministry of Culture has stated that by 2015 the online gaming market should reach $32 billion - this is quite a reach above Niko's current projection for $14 billion in China that year, which is still a 24% CAGR over 2011. The MOC expects the global release of 100 titles annually, much higher than the number today, including 3-5 Top 10 global titles. If the Chinese gamer population and online games revenue continue at the brisk pace already experienced, then the games might make that ranking based only on usage in China. Right now China accounts for about half of the global online games market. We find it quite unlikely that the market will achieve $32 billion, unless their definition varies greatly from ours.

At the Barcelona Mobile World Congress two Chinese smartphone handset makers, Huawei and ZTE, showed their might in an increasingly competitive field. We know from our very recent gamers survey that these brands are popular in China, and it seems they should become worldwide competitors to big companies such as Nokia, Sony, Samsung and Apple. There is also a broad distribution of Chinese brands within the popular tablet segment in China. Many of the Chinese phones and tablets run Android.

CCTV, China's state-run television company, has strict rules about airing gaming competitions and even commercials for online games. Typically they like to keep the TV shows free of online gaming activity, with a few exceptions. Now though, it seems that more TV channels in China are allowing gaming commercials, and that regulators are approving more and more supportive activities to promote Chinese online games domestically and abroad. This is another indicator of the government's commitment to international growth for Chinese online games companies.
