Special edition: Chinese game companies at E3

The major Chinese online game operators have been expanding to new markets outside of mainland China for many months, and in some cases years. E3 is the video game industry expo in which game companies from around the globe show off their upcoming games and allow industry professionals to see what they are all about. Last week E3 2011 in Los Angeles displayed lots of impressive games - but most of them were for consoles. The show really emphasized console games and online games were far less prominently displayed.

The Chinese online game companies exhibiting at E3 were Perfect World and a few companies represented in the Zhongguancun booth. Zhongguancun is the district in Beijing that offers favorable taxation and other benefits to digital entertainment companies. The companies represented in that booth were Baiyou, Guangyuhuaxia, LIneKong, and Talentwalker. And there was also a "Taiwan Pavilion" that showcased some developers, including InterServ and Wayi. We also noticed that Winking, a mainland based outsourcing studio, was represented at E3.

We were hoping for a stronger showing from the Chinese companies to show the rest of the world what they have accomplished with online game development. Maybe next year?

Here is a photo taken at the show.
