ChinaJoy was bigger than ever this year, and the tone turned to social and casual games. While the show floor still had all the big operators showing off their 3D and 2D MMORPGs, the theme of many talks was more about SNS games. The press talked about how the Shanghai Expo hired all the pretty girls so ChinaJoy had few hot booth babes, but this observer did not notice. ChinaJoy is a scene for avid gamers - more of a consumer show, except for the single professional day on which the game companies and government officials walk around and check out everything. It is inconvenient that many of the related sessions, such as the China Games Outsourcing Conference (CGOC) were held at a different venue far away from the convention center as it makes it difficult to attend the whole show.  Plus both venues are called the Shanghai Exhibition Center, so there was even more confusion. But, the take away is that there were many international and local speakers, 4 full halls of exhibitors and attendees galore.
VentureBeat produced a very good article recently on the state of the social game industry in China - essentially, an industry full of copy-cats. This is no secret: anything that can easily be copied in China will be copied in China, and the gamers don't really care. Many gamers we've surveyed know that the games on Tencent are copies of original titles found elsewhere, but they don't mind playing the copies because the quality is good and all of their friends are on Tencent too. The solution to piracy will not be driven from the consumers in China, it must be something that the companies solve at the business level, and then the regulators can support with enforceable policies.
Talk about coming full circle. Once upon a time there was a small Chinese distribution company called Legend, serving AST computers and then in the mid-1990s picking up a line called Acer. By distributing Acer (and some other foreign brands) Legend built up an incredibly vast distribution network on the mainland. Then they dropped Acer and slotted in their own secretly developed PC, which went on to capture the top market share in Asia and eventually to earn Legend so much money that the company (after a name change to Lenovo) purchased IBM's personal computers division. In China the leading PC brands are Lenovo, Founder, Haier and a few other names. Founder announced August 5th that it will now transfer it's PC brand and IP to Acer, and thereafter act as Acer's distributor in mainland China. They lost 15 years, but it is a big market.
