A few days ago there was a story on the Internet that circulated
rapidly, falsely announcing that Google's search engine had been blocked in China. The
take-away from that instance is: don't always believe what you read, especially
about China. The regulatory hurdles are very high here and they change often.
It is imperative that foreign companies know the laws and policies, understand
the realities of them in the market (often not what is on paper), and take the
time to figure out what it means with their corporate culture. It is not sufficient
to simply read what has been written in blogs or other online press. The
reality of the Google story is that on July 11th Google won the renewal of
their license to operate so long as they agreed to allow its content to be supervised by regulators. Baidu was likely hoping that Google would just leave, but it didn't
happen that way. This market is too important. If your company needs help
understanding the realities of the continuously evolving regulatory landscape,
Niko is here to help you.

Perfect World is expected to achieve overseas revenues of $100 million
this year, which is aggressive considering they attained only $7.8 million in
Q1. The company is leading the race by Chinese online game operators to expand
overseas, and others are trying to catch up. The company's titles include:
"Perfect World," "Legend of Martial Arts," "Perfect
World II," "Zhu Xian," "Chi Bi," "Pocketpet
Journey West," "Battle of the Immortals" and "Fantasy Zhu
Xian;" and a casual game: "Hot Dance Party." While a majority of
their profits come from China, Perfect World has already expanded beyond
mainland China to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia, the Philippines, Thailand,
the United States, and many other countries across the globe.

NetEase was granted GAPP approval for WoW: Wrath of the Lich King after
many months of trying. The game may launch by August 18th, according to some
reports. WoW gamers in China are quite eager for that to happen, especially
those who play more than 22 hours a week (hard core, by Niko's definition),
have 4 separate WoW accounts, and have reached level 70 on all 4 of them. These
gamers need new content.
