Niko agrees with recent comments in the news that WoW has a healthy life ahead, including in China, assuming regulators approve future expansions as they probably will do. Although WoW has not reached previous numbers of 11.5 million active users, when WLK finally passes through its 80-day review then China will help Blizzard expand its numbers once again. With Cataclysm on the way, the introduction of micro-transactions, and the new mobile auction subscription: WoW still has several years to go as one of the leading MMOs in the world.
As VentureBeat points out, Niko agrees: this is the year of digital distribution in the video game business. China would be a great opportunity for whichever model that succeeds. Digital distribution would help with the piracy problems that China currently faces and it would go perfectly in line with the rising trend: Chinese gamers are buying more personal computers to game over going to Internet cafes, though cafes still provide a social atmosphere. With Valve's Steam already succeeding on PCs and now available for Macs, their success as a digital distributor shows that it can be done. Niko believes digital distribution has a lot of room for growth in 2010 and beyond, and that China is the perfect market to explore the business solutions for piracy and the vast geography.
