Introducing...

AGH welcomes our new research fellow, Ada Undieh. Ada Undieh is a recent graduate of Princeton University, where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering. She has significant research and technical writing experience, and previously worked with a student team to design a financially-promising, commercial-scale process for producing biodiesel from microalgae.

Quote of the Month
"When only the emissions from the burning fuel are analyzed, natural gas appears to be a cleaner option. But when you factor in the entire life cycle of natural gas...with that of engineered wood pellets, the pellets are a far better environmental choice. They're clean, and they're sustainable."

- Chemical and biological engineering professor Xiaotao Bi of the University of British Columbia in an article from UBC's Ingenuity magazine.

Vogelzang & Napoleon Stoves "Meet or Exceed" EPA Requirements
The only difference? One is certified and the other is not. No wonder consumers are confused. Vogelzang stoves are often advertised by saying they "meet or exceed EPA requirements." So do Napoleon stoves. Yet the companies mean entirely different things.

Several manufacturers are integrating the same lambda sensors used in automobile combustion engines into their newer wood boilers. How does this work to improve efficiency and is it worth the cost?

Want to Pocket a Quick $75?

Imagine a flyer like this included in your electric or gas utility bill once a year. In the Maryland area, flyers like this are sent out by utilities to remove old refrigerators. Why not also for wood stoves?  With so little funding for wood stove change-outs and the cost per change out so high, we think that far lower cost programs like this should be tried annually in any area that is or about to be in non-attainment.

The Alliance for Green Heat mobilized stakeholders in West Virginia to urge the state to include thermal biomass in its next five-year energy plan. The draft plan mentioned biofuels, biodiesel and other forms of bioenergy but failed to discuss biomass heating.

MD Starts Processing Wood & Pellet Stove Rebate
The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) recently launched the Wood and Pellet Stove Rebate Program, which offers a $400 rebate for wood stoves and $600 for pellet stoves that emit less than half the particulates that are allowed by the EPA to be eligible.

The data is in: According to the 2011 Census, wood heat continues to be one of the fastest growing residential heat sources in America. The number of American households using wood as a primary source of heat increased 1.72% in 2011, continuing a decade long growth spurt for the renewable heating fuel.

Committees in both the Senate and House approved bills that include reinstatement of the $300 tax credit for wood stoves and boilers. Unfortunately, the loophole allowing virtually all stoves to be 75% efficient is included rather than a real threshold as measured by B415.1. The result is good for manufacturers making low efficiency stoves and bad for consumers who end up with equipment that wastes wood and pellets.

The Chimney Safety Institute of America asked us to contribute a blog and we wrote about the impact of emissions and efficiency on your chimney. Our conclusion: if you really want an efficient stove, only trust efficiency numbers that are based on a B415 test.

Last month we reported on the EPA's fining of stove manufacturers for record-keeping violations. We want to clarify that our story did not mean to imply that these fines occurred in the past one or two years. Rich Ali of the HPBA provides the HPBA's response.

Wood Stove Design Challenge Updates

A total of 33 teams have registered for the Wood Stove Design Challenge! To ensure all interested teams have an opportunity to participate, the Alliance has extended the registration deadline until November 1st. Visit the Challenge website for more.

Design Challenge Profiled in Popular Mechanics Magazine
Check out Popular Mechanics' recent feature on the Wood Stove Design Challenge! Popular Mechanics is excited to partner with AGH in fueling the design of next-generation wood stoves, helping America affordably reduce fossil fuel use and protect the environment. Expect more wood heat articles in the future.

Washington Watch

Legislators have proposed the PACE Assessment Protection Act (H.R. 2599), in response to efforts that would block continued implementation of PACE programs nationwide. The wood and pellet heating community has to engage state and local PACE programs if we want our cleanest and most efficient units to be included.

Murkowski Biomass Amendment Passed by Senate
This amendment allows Native American tribes throughout the US to participate in biomass energy demonstration projects and may include wood stove change out projects.

Focus on Firewood

Scott Salverson of Duluth, Minnesotta has launched the National Firewood Association (NFA). The NFA is developing standards for responsible firewood production and plans to represent the firewood industry with government agencies and legislators. For more information: www.nationalfirewoodassociation.org.

There is a lot of info about how to buy firewood online, but this is one of the better succinct versions of tips to buy good wood, from the Chimney Safety Institute of America.

Focus on Pellets

The consumer base for bulk-delivery of pellet fuels is still small, but distributors are making bold investments in pellet delivery equipment, betting that, like Germany, the U.S. will transition to wide-scale wood pellet heating with bulk storage in the coming years.

Northern Woodlands Magazine gives an excellent overview of a recent surge in wood pellet bulk-delivery in the Northeast, where more homeowners are switching from liquid fuel to wood pellets for home heating.

Consumer Focus

Safety Products for Existing Fireplaces and Stoves

The Hearth, Patio, and Barbecue Association recently put out several recommendations for making fireplaces and stoves safer for families. A variety of options are profiled, including safety screens and gates.

Low-Income Focus

Rural Renewable is a solar furnace company with a mission: bringing renewable energy solutions to lower-income homes. Now the company has set its sights on Vermont, where it plans to install solar furnaces in low-income homes throughout the state in addition to its several planned commercial installations.

Blaze King's King 1107 Edges Out The Competition to  Become the Most Efficient Wood Stove on EPA List

Blaze King's King 1107 catalytic stove at 82% reported efficiency recently became the most efficient wood stove on the EPA list, nudging out the Woodstock Soapstone Progress Hybrid by 1%. Efficiencies are measured with Canada's B415, reported in higher heating value (HHV) and are now being added to the EPA's certified stove list. Previously, only default efficiencies were listed. As more non-cat stoves appear on the EPA list, we will also feature the most efficient non-cat.

From the Newsroom

International

Greece: Many fuel stations are predicted to shut down this coming year as demand for heating oil has sharply declined and is predicted to continue to decline up to 40% each year. Demand for wood has skyrocketed. Wood heating is 60% cheaper than oil.

Ireland: Ireland has signed onto biomass heating movement in a big way with the reopening of the Biomass Processing Challenge fund. Northern Ireland is now offering funds to agriculture and forestry business for installation of biomass-fueled technologies for heat and power. Applications are accepted until November 30.

U.K: The U.K. is soliciting feedback on a subsidy scheme aimed at helping households replace their fossil fuel heating systems with renewable-based ones, including biomass boilers. The lead proposal is that the subsidy would be provided through tariff-based payments over a seven-year period.

Firewood Offers Alaskans Alternative to Expense of Oil

AK: A burgeoning sustainable firewood business is helping to revive the economy and community of Napaimute, Alaska, a fading part-time town that previously had only one year-round resident.

Proposition 3 Stokes Fairbanks Wood Stove Debate

AK: Supporters and opponents of Proposition 3, a move to prevent Fairbanks borough from regulating air pollution, are working to influence public opinion on the issue before the Oct. 2 vote. The Fairbanks Daily recently also published an op-ed covering this issue ("Keep Local Role").

AK: Alaskan inventor Lasse Holmes uses principles of rocket design to produce affordable smokeless stoves that produce twice as much heat with far less wood.

Air Board Hoses Down San Lorenzo's Backyard Burns
