Alliance for Green Heat Projects & Activities

More and more teams are registering for the Wood Stove Design Challenge! The official count is up to 19. So far, we have 14 teams hailing from North America, one from South America, two from Europe, and two from Southeast Asia. Click the image for a larger view of team locations.

Visit the Alliance Stove Booth at the DC Green Festival
The Alliance is hosting an exhibit at the DC Green Festival Sept. 29th and 30th. The Festival is a favorite for residential solar and geothermal companies - and federal agencies and officials. Modern stove technology from Hwam, Tulikivi and Caluwe will be featured. Visit us in booth #1508, on the corner of the renewable energy wing.

Next Generation Wood Stove Survey Results
The Alliance took an informal survey of the readers of its newsletter in August 2012. Sixty two readers gave their opinions about wood stove innovation and next generation wood stove technology. Click here for the results and here for an analysis that compares the responses of industry and government employees and those who do and do not heat with wood at home.

Vermont Castings, England Stove Works and Fireplace Products International (FPI) were each fined $49,000 for NSPS violations by the EPA enforcement division. In addition, New Buck Stoves was fined $35,000 and Travis and Sun Spot received very small fines.

The state of Utah completed a proposed revision to regulations of OWB, which would ban new installation of boilers in non-attainment areas, with the exception of families who already own wood boilers, who could purchase Phase 2 units. Central Boiler wrote extensive comments in opposition of the regulation, claiming Phase 2 boilers are cleaner than certified wood stoves.

Summary of Energy Programs in the 2012 Farm Bill

The Senate draft 2012 Farm Bill, which has no provisions for residential biomass heating, provides $800 million over 5 years in mandatory funding for corporate subsidies primarily for liquid biomass fuels. $25 million would go to community pellet and chip heating systems. The House did not pass any bill.

Mitt Romney sets an ambitious goal with his pledge to achieve U.S. energy independence by 2020. It's just too bad his plan relies almost entirely on fossil fuels and largely ignores the solid promise of clean energy.

Consumer Watch

Consumer Reports Highlights Lack of Biomass Tax Credit

The October issue of Consumer Reports' Energy IQ section highlighted that solar geothermal and wind receive a federal tax credit but pellet stoves don't. 75% of those who took the Energy IQ test correctly identified pellet stoves as the renewable device that did not qualify for a tax credit. "The pellet stove industry is lobbying hard for its reinstatement, saying the U.S. is the potential world leader in the production of the appliances and their clean-burning fuel," CR reported.

Time to Consider Thermal "System Benefits Charge"

BTEC Chair Charlie Neibling says thermal energy is often overlooked by lawmakers yet heat represents more than one-third of all energy consumed. Perhaps an SBC or "systems benefits charge" like those applied to heating oil/propane customers in Massachusetts could help this effort in the entire country?

Focus on Firewood

One Firewood Seller in Australia Selling Green Wood

We often run material from the Firewood Association of Australia because it's a great example of what a national firewood association can do to ensure dry wood is being delivered. This story is about overall firewood supply - and reports that one dealer is mixing in green wood.

How to Mindfully Invest in the Timber Market

If timber itself is undervalued due to a slow real estate market, firewood remains a potential liquid source of income because of rising gasoline and heating oil prices. A sustainable fuel wood yield can be relied on for income year in and year out.

Focus on Pellets

FutureMetrics Analyzes Wood Pellet Project Risks

In order to illustrate advanced modeling techniques for identifying and quantifying risks associated with wood pellet manufacturing projects, FutureMetrics Inc. has released an overview of a risk analysis. The analysis uses a simulation to to quantify key decision metrics for the development of a wood pellet plant.

The Most Efficient Wood Stove on the EPA Stove List -

The Woodstock Soapstone Progress Hybrid

The Woodstock Soapstone Progress Hybrid is the highest efficiency wood stove listed by the EPA at 81%. The Progress is a true hybrid because it combines a catalytic combustor with a secondary combustion system. Combining these two different systems in one wood stove captures a clean and efficient burn throughout the entire burn range.

A similar hybrid stove, the Cape Cod, made by Travis is listed by the EPA at 80.3. Efficiencies are measured with Canada's B415 and reported in higher heating value (HHV).  If you want a very high efficiency stove that saves lots of fuel and have long burn times, these stoves are excellent choices. As cleaner and/or more efficient appear on the EPA stove list, we will feature them here and on our website.

From the Newsroom
AK: In an effort to battle wintertime air pollution, the borough of Fairbanks, AK is considering installing about a half-dozen wood-drying kilns as part of a greater effort to reduce pollution from wood stoves and boilers.

CA: The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District's change out program will fund changing out EPA certified wood stoves if a family wants to purchase a gas or pellet stove. It will also subsidize the replacement of a pellet stove for a gas stove.

Mass. Publishes Final RPS Woody Biomass Regulations

MA: The state Department of Energy Resources has published its final regulation pertaining to the eligibility of woody biomass energy for its RPS regulations, and it appears as though stand-alone biomass power will no longer be a feasible option in the state.

MD: In recent months, both Maryland and New Hampshire tipped the scales in favor of thermal renewables by passing or amending innovative, groundbreaking laws that will significantly drive up the use of thermal renewable energy in their states and beyond.

MT: The Lewis & Clark City-County Health Department will begin a telephone survey to learn more about the number, type, and age of wood stoves being used in the county.

Got Wood?
NH: NH remains the second most oil-dependent state in the country. NH would be able to retain approximately $200 million annually if they could reduce their dependence on imported energy by 25%.
OR: About half of Oakridge's particulate pollution comes from certified, new woodstoves, according to LRAPA's analysis. About 30 percent comes from old, non-certified woodstoves, and about 8 percent comes from open fireplaces.

VA: After 10 years, the Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and other other officials finally broke ground for Enviva's wood pellet plant in Franklin, VA. The plant will cost $91 million and will create 72 new jobs.

Re-vote Resurrects Montpelier Biomass Project

VT: During a special meeting on Aug. 29, the Montpelier city council voted once again on the fate of a district heating project that would replace an old state-owned plant with a new biomass plant.

The sheer size of the doors and fireboxes of outdoor boilers make it easy - and tempting - to load large, unsplit logs. And, many outdoor boilers are oversized, further compounding emission problems.
