Introducing...

Welcome to our summer intern, Anita Alexander. Anita will be a senior this fall at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she is majoring in Environmental Science and Technology and getting a minor in Project Management. She was in the Civil and Environmental Engineering program for two years, before switching to Environmental Science. She has been involved in solar oven and solar shower projects and developed a Single-Stream Recycling awareness pamphlet for residents at her apartment complex.

15 Teams Registered for Wood Stove Design Challenge

The Wood Stove Design Challenge is gaining momentum as the fall deadline for registration approaches. Teams have until October 1st to register and December 20th to complete the application. There are 15 teams registered to date, including 3 student teams looking for sponsorships and 6 teams who are looking for additional team members. If you're interested, please contact Team Captains: http://www.forgreenheat.org/stovedesign/teams.html

Wood Stove Energy Audit Update

The Alliance continues to press for energy auditors to include wood stoves in their audits. Discussions with EPA, NYSERDA, BPI and state officials point to a near unanimous agreement that wood stoves deserve better representation in energy audits.

Alliance Works to Stop Installs of Uncertified Wood Stoves in Maryland County

Responding to local concerns, the Alliance for Green Heat is working to ban new installations of old, uncertified stoves in Montgomery County.  The county is more populous than 7 US states. The Mid-Atlantic HPBA supports the initiative and the Maryland Lung Association is likely to support it as well.

Washington Watch

DOE Starts New Method to Ensure Cost-Effectiveness of Residential Building

DOE launches new "method" for measuring the cost-effectiveness of residential energy consumption through the use of specific residential energy codes. The codes, based on life-cycle-analysis, determine homeowners initial and long-term savings. This should help in understand cost-effectiveness of wood and pellet stoves.

My Air, My Health Challenge

The "My Air, My Health" Challenge seeks innovators and software developers to create a way to display real-time, geographic monitoring and reporting of air pollutants using a portable integrated system. The challenge requires the system to link air-pollutant concentrations with data provided by the EPA and HHS.

Air Quality Focus

Will Libby Fall Back into Non-Attainment Status?

In response to a court order, the EPA proposed updates to its national air quality standards for harmful fine particle pollution. The EPA identified 6 counties that may fail to achieve the standards by 2020, including Lincoln County, MT, where Libby is located.

How Clean Is Your Air?

The American Lung Association says that nine out of ten U.S. cities with the worst air quality are all in California. There is a definite correlation between ozone and particle pollution and health as poor air quality is a serious cause of premature deaths in California.

Focus on Firewood/Pellets

Protect America's Trees and Forests: Don't Move Firewood

Going camping this summer?  Leave your firewood at home and buy it at the campground.  It will save you gas, but more importantly you could be spreading invasive species.  Bringing firewood from home increases the risk of spreading tree-killing pests from one location that may be resistant to that pest to another is not.  Spread the word: leave your firewood at home.

Study Says Communities Could Make Own Pellets

According to the Arctic Energy Alliance, individual communities can make their own wood pellets. The Alliance stated that if the community can accommodate a factory that can distribute pellets to residents, and is able to make a profit from this production, then making wood pellets within such a community is worthwhile.

Consumer Spotlight

Consumer Recall Notice for Dangerous Log Splitter

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Crary Industries, has recalled the "Echo Bear Cat Hydraulic Log Splitter", because the end cap of the splitter's hydraulic cylinder can break off and potentially hit the user or bystander.

International

CANADA: Last month, 5,000 wood-burning models as part of British Columbia's provincial Wood Stove Exchange Program. Since the it began 5 years ago, the program has been a huge success.

EUROPE: The European Commission has officially released a working document on a possible Commission regulation concerning solid fuel boilers. The Eco-Design of Energy-using Products Consultation Forum is on the 12th of July.

Experts Sweep Up in Trend for Wood Burners
ENGLAND: Despite the economic downturn, one old fashioned trade is on the up-chimney sweeping. The National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) is training up the next generation of sweeps following the revamp of wood stove popularity in the UK.

FRANCE: The recent election of Socialist Francois Hollande as France's next President may herald a return of generous incentives for renewable energy, including wood and pellet stoves.

Hazy Days: Berkley Lab Tackles Pollution in Mongolia
MONGOLIA: Scientists at The Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory are using their cooking stove expertise to help Ulaan Baatar, one of the most polluted cities in the world. The city has far too many outdated stoves and boilers.

NEW ZEALAND: There is a debate regarding whether homes that are being rebuilt after the earthquake in Christchurch, NZ should be built with wood-burners. Can new ultra clean wood burners "allow the use of wood of any quality as a fuel, and also tolerate poor operating by the user, deliver no or ultra-low pollution to the air"?

Maine Company to Build Austrian Pellet Boilers in the U.S.

ME: Maine Energy Systems in Bethel, Maine, plans to start building automated, wood-pellet boilers in the U.S. instead of importing them from Europe.

MT: In order to meet the constantly high firewood demands of the local community, Libby District, Montana is publicizing certain roads to be open for spring firewood cutting.

NH Adopts Thermal Incentive for Renewable Standard
NH: New Hampshire Governor John Lynch and the state's Senate and House of Representatives passed the NH Senate Bill 218 that adds thermal renewable energy to the State's renewable portfolio standard (RPS). NH is the first state to grant renewable heat energy the same incentive as renewable electricity through this new RPS.
A Page of History: Oregon's Firsts

In 1986, there were only 19 companies who made Oregon's list of certified wood stoves. Back then, Oregon was the only government entity certifying stoves. Of those 19 companies, only a handful are still in existence, including Lopi, Blaze King, Jotul and Osburn.

In 1989, Jackson County, OR adopted the first ban on the installation of non-certified wood stoves (to prevent used non-certified stoves from being re-installed). In 1992, the Oregon state building code was revised to prohibit the installation of non-certified wood stoves statewide. To read more about this story, click here.
