From the Editor
As we begin this new year, I wanted to take a moment to say "thank you." The support we received from everyone has allowed us to reach a major 2009 goal. In October, we added Monday afternoons to our schedule. These additional four hours a week allow us to provide approximately 1,000 more patient visits per year.
Adding Monday afternoons to our schedule also means more volunteer hours from our doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, and lay volunteers. They always step up to contribute what is needed, and without them we couldn't exist. This month our Featured Volunteer is Dr. Charles Floyd. Although recently retired, he had a vital impact on the Free Health Center during his many years as a volunteer.
For 2010, our goal centers on serving more and more of those who need medical and dental care in the Northwest Arkansas region. We plan to expand our operating hours on Mondays as soon as possible. Quite simply put, the more hours we can be open, the more patients we are able to serve.
Thanks again to all of you for your support in 2009!

Featured Volunteer
Charles Floyd, M.D.
In 1994, Dr. Charles Floyd began volunteering his services at the Northwest Arkansas Free Health Center. He has been providing care to our patients ever since, making him the physician with the most consecutive years of service. "Now retiring, Dr. Floyd will be sorely missed at the Center," commented Monika Fischer-Massie, Executive Director. "We are pleased to share with all of you a bit of his personal story."
"I was born in a log cabin (no joke) near Capps, which is a small community near Harrison, Arkansas. That was September 20, 1930 just as the Great Depression was getting under way. My family was very poor, subsistence farming, raise your own food and sell enough produce (milk, eggs, etc.) to purchase some supplies. My family did not have a home of their own, so we lived with relatives or on the farms of relatives. When I was 6 years old I was diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) and my family was told to move to Arizona. The treatment then for TB was fresh air and prayer. So we lived in Arizona through the 7th grade. My father helped clean irrigation ditches and finally got a promotion to 'ditch rider.' He would turn water on and off to farms for irrigation. Life was a bit better.
My mother always stressed education. After high school, I started pre-med at University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Barbara and I were married just before I started to University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS)--I would never have made it without her. After graduation, I did a rotating internship and then was drafted into the Army. I had planned to pursue cardiology, but the Army put me to doing pediatrics. I am not sure why, except I had very good grades in pediatrics during med school, or maybe they thought I would do less harm there? It fit, so I completed a pediatric residency at the University of Colorado. Following my army obligations, I spent 25 years in a very busy pediatric practice in Fort Smith and then taught at Arkansas Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) in Fort Smith.
My introduction to Northwest Arkansas Free Health Center came while I was the volunteer Medical Director at a summer camp for children with cancer at Lake Fort Smith State Park. One of the volunteers at the camp was also a volunteer at the Health Center.
The patients at Northwest Arkansas Free Health Center were very appreciative, and I tried to treat everyone with the kindness and courtesy they deserved. The amount of pathology that walked through the doors at the Health Center was always amazing to me. One lady with severe peripheral vascular disease, that I referred to UAMS for surgery, had been misdiagnosed as having arthritis because of severe leg pain. Another lady with severe hypothyroidism had been lost in the shuffle. There is so much need among those less fortunate--the need for treatment before their conditions become even worse.
I have worked hard throughout my medical career, but have always found time to volunteer and fulfill my commitment to assist others. It gave me a warm fuzzy feeling to know that I was helping someone. I remembered my early years of poverty so I could identify with them."
Congratulations on your retirement, Dr. Floyd! Thank you for your dedicated service to Northwest Arkansas Free Health Center.
The Free Health Center operates using volunteer physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, technicians, and lay volunteers, coordinated by a small paid staff. As we move toward expanded hours, more volunteers are needed. If you can help, please contact John Moores.

In Her Own Words - A Patient's Story
"I have been a patient at the Northwest Arkansas Free Health Center for going on four years. I am a 55 year-old female, a degreed professional, and had just become unemployed and had no insurance. Funds were so low they were almost completely depleted. I was scared and did not know what I would do; no way I could afford a doctor's visit and also the medicine. My first visit was just to get my blood pressure prescriptions renewed. Well, needless to say, I got a doctor's visit plus all my medicine to take home. I was amazed at what was provided for me--doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and office personnel all to assist. Then, as time went on, my health took a turn and started to decline rapidly. I was under a lot of stress, still unemployed, and struggling to survive. A multitude of health problems came upon me, and then depression set in. I knew I had to get my health back on track if anything else was going to be able to happen in my life.
This Center has not just restored my health and gotten me back on track health wise. I truly believe it has been a life saving grace for me. My health problems were serious enough to be life threatening, and the Center stayed right with me and managed to get me all the services I needed to get diagnosed and treated. The people there are all very professional and respectful. Most of the staff are volunteers. This made me realize the importance of giving to one another. These are professional medical people who can work six days a week just at their jobs and may give their day off to come in and provide people like me their incredible skills and knowledge. Wow, that is truly giving and sacrificing.
I still don't have many funds, but I have my health back. I am hoping these words can be my way of giving back to the Free Health Center for all they have done for me. The unfortunate can be a group of people that are easily forgotten. I started to feel that way, but this Center made me feel that there were some that didn't forget us. I just cannot say enough to express my gratitude and appreciation for this institution. Life can be good!"

We Did It...
With Your Support!
Northwest Arkansas Free Health Center is funded by donations and this year, for the first time, by proceeds from the State of Arkansas Tobacco Excise Tax Act. The support we received during 2009 not only covered our day-to-day operating costs, it allowed us to expand our hours and be open on Monday afternoons.
There are many individuals, businesses, and foundations who contribute to our success. Some give of their time and others offer items on our Wish List. Many attend and sponsor events we hold, such as our annual tennis tournament. We are also always honored when another organization holds a charitable function and designates us as a beneficiary.
While we can't possibly list everyone here, please know that we appreciate each contribution regardless of amount. That old saying, "every penny counts...," is very true at this Center.
Thank you! |
