D'Var Torah

Lee I. Sherman

President/CEO

Last week, I was in Barcelona, Spain. On Shabbat, I had the opportunity to meander through the streets of the old Jewish ghetto in the Gothic Quarter. Barcelona had an active Jewish community for much of medieval times, but like the other Jewish communities in Spain, all of that had ended by the close of the 15th century. Between 1391 and 1492, all of the Jews of Barcelona either fled the country or converted to Christianity. Today, little remains of that vibrant Jewish community, although there is what may be the oldest surviving synagogue in Europe.

Jewish history is replete with examples of Jewish communities and individuals forced to leave their homes. Yet, there are also examples of relocation for positive reasons, culminating in the millions who have made aliyah to Israel in the past sixty-plus years. In this week's parashah, Lekh Lekha, we find the origins of the Jewish people's constant yearning and movement to a homeland. We are introduced to Abram, who is instructed by God to "Go forth from your native land and from your father's house to the land I will show you." And Abram left the comfort of his home and in an amazing act of faith went on a lifetime journey to establish a homeland for his people.

Today there is a reemerging Jewish community in Barcelona. There is a vital Jewish homeland in Israel. There are strong Jewish communities throughout the world. Whether we physically leave our homes like Abram, or go on the spiritual journeys that strengthen our lives, we are rooted in the absolute faith demonstrated by Abram when he accepted God's instruction and started a new life.

It's Long Term Care Awareness Month

Learn Who You Should Be Talking to About Long Term Care Insurance

AJFCA would be pleased to help your agency launch a Long Term Care Education Initiative. Learn how to empower your community. Teach individuals how to preserve their dignity, and protect their legacy. Visit the LTC portion of the AJFCA website to take the next step and begin a LTC Education Initiative in your community.

LTC Awareness Month is an industry-wide effort to raise awareness of how important it is to plan for the future. Without a plan to cover LTC needs, many people put their retirement savings in jeopardy, run the risk of becoming a burden to their children or give up their option to choose where they receive care.

The goal for LTC Awareness Month is to help deliver this important message to a receptive audience - the people who are most likely to buy an LTCi policy.

To help find the right people, LIMRA conducted a series of focus groups that included both LTCi buyers and consumers who matched the profile of likely buyers. The objective was to find out what's on people's minds so you know how to approach them about the importance of planning for LTC.

Who Rules: Offline or Online Donors?

October 6, 2011 - Allyson Kapin - frogloop

Where do most of your organization's donations come from? Offline or online donors? For many nonprofits, about 90% of their  donations  come from offline donations. While direct mail still brings in a lot of money for nonprofits, it's getting more and more frogloopexpensive (not to mention the toll it's taking on the environment ) and online fundraising is soaring. According to a recent Blackbaud study, online fundraising grew 34% and raised over $20 billion dollars in 2010. If your nonprofit still hasn't carved out a good strategy for integrating both offline and online fundraising, you need to start now.

More Key Donor Facts:

  • The media age for an online donor is 24-55.
  • 32% of online donors earn $100K+ VS 18% of offline donors.
  • The median gift of first time online donors is almost double of offline donors - $62 VS $32.
  • Online donors also donate more money over time than offline donors. Check out infographic below by Blackbaud.

Idealware's November Tip - Defining Your Social Media Goals and Audience

idealware logo

Social media often has two aspects. There's an important listening aspect that helps you hear what people are saying about you online, and there's a second aspect that includes hosting conversations. Through tools like Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, you can post information, encourage comments and get feedback. Read more about social media channels as tools to communicate in a social manner rather than the end in and of itself.
