D'Var Torah

Lee I. Sherman

President/CEO

Last Friday, the nonprofit world of health and human services lost one of its leaders. Peter Goldberg, CEO of the Alliance for Children & Families, and a friend and colleague to many of you, passed away suddenly. Prior to his death, Peter had written an article for the Chronicle of Philanthropy entitled "Governments Must Stop Putting Burdens on Nonprofits." As you read Peter's words, we are reminded of the passion for the work of the human services field that Peter brought to his work.

Peter understood that the strength of our agencies relies upon the support we receive from many sources. His article discusses government support because in light of the ongoing budget discussions in Washington, that is the current topic. But, the support we require is shared by many individuals and entities so that our agencies can continue to serve all those who need our help. In this week's parashah, Eikev, in the midst of his instructions to the people to choose devotion to God so they may be blessed, Moses describes the power and disposition of a God who "upholds the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and befriends the stranger, providing him with food and clothing." (Deut. 10:17). Our work improving the lives of countless individuals and families is a true reflection of this basic value.

Peter Goldberg devoted his life to improving the lives of others. He understood that there are some in our communities who need assistance and it is incumbent on our agencies to provide that assistance. He also recognized and reminded us that our agencies require support to fulfill our mission. May his memory be for a blessing.

11 Ways to Use Technology to Thank Donors

Organizations use technology to engage donors, manage them in databases, and even accept their donation payments online. With a little creative thinking you can save staff time on this important step and increase the likelihood that donors will give again.idealware logo

Such classic techniques as thank-you letters, phone calls, events and special gifts will never go out of style. Many of these translate surprisingly well to online or technology-enhanced techniques, providing both new ways to make donors feel appreciated and, in some cases, organizational savings.
