Lautenberg Amendment Extended

Led by our colleagues at HIAS, the international migration agency of the American Jewish community, many Jewish organizations were instrumental in ensuring that an extension of the Lautenberg Amendment was included in the FY2011 Continuing Resolution (H.R. 1473), signed into law on April 18th by President Obama. The Lautenberg Amendment, which facilitates the processing for U.S. refugee status for Jews and other historically persecuted religious minorities from Iran and the former Soviet Union (FSU), expired on October 1, 2010. It was attached to the CR through the efforts of Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), along with Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Mark Kirk (R-IL).

The Lautenberg Amendment, as included in the Continuing Resolution, will only be extended to June 1, 2011; this will allow applications filed since Oct. 1, 2010 to be considered retroactively. New applications will also be considered only until June 1, 2011. According to Gideon Aronoff, President & CEO of HIAS: "It is extremely important that our former HIAS clients waste no time in notifying relatives in the FSU or Iran of this temporary extension of the Lautenberg Amendment. Anyone eligible for the refugee program who is considering leaving their homeland for the U.S. must complete and submit refugee applications without delay."

Although efforts will be made to extend further the Lautenberg Amendment, there are no guarantees.  Therefore, eligible refugees should act swiftly as there is the possibility this could be the final opportunity.

Sometimes when we repeat a ritual often enough, we just begin to take it for granted and do not question its origins. It would be easy for many of the rituals of Pesach to fall into that trap, except for the fact that this is a holiday that incorporates questions into its very rituals, creating a ready format of Q&A. Two questions that came to me this week are: "Why do we eat charoset? and "Why do we read the Song of Songs on Shabbat Hol HaMoed Pesach?" These seemingly unrelated questions may have answers that align them very closely.

We have been told since we were children that we eat charoset on Pesach because it reminds us of the mortar that the Israelites used while laying bricks when they were in slavery. Sounds reasonable except that there is no actual instruction or blessing in the Haggadah to explain the meaning of the charoset.  Moreover, the charoset at our table is sweet and tasty enough for everyone to demand seconds (particularly this year when Nancy tried two new recipes each incorporating multiple kinds of fruit and nuts so that there was a lively debate as to which was better), certainly not something that reminds us of the bitterness of slavery. It is that very sweetness which connects to the special reading we will do this Shabbat during the intermediate days of the holiday.

Traditionally, the Song of Songs is read during Pesach, despite the fact that the holiday itself is not mentioned specifically in the poem. There is a reference to the "chariots of Pharoah," which has been interpreted to be those chariots which drowned chasing the Israelites. This seems a bit of a reach to me, even in a poem with as many layers of allegory as the Song of Songs. One thing clear about this poem is that it is a love story. It is a song from a lover to his (or her) betrothed, it is a song full of the sweetness of life, of the promise of new beginnings. The kind of new beginnings that we retell at our Seders when God brought the Israelites out of bondage and began the formation of a people that would forever be in a deep spiritual relationship with Him.

The Song of Songs is the charoset of the Bible, full of the sweet taste of the natural fruits and nuts that suggest the freedom and commitment of a strong relationship, and the possibility contained within that relationship. "Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his precious fruits." Song of Songs, 4:16.

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach.
