U.S. Holocaust Museum Project

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is trying to identify more than 1,000 children in photos that date from when they were scattered across Europe at the end of World War II and taken in by relief agencies.

The museum's "Remember Me" project seeks the public's help in identifying 1,100 children among tens of thousands who were uprooted by the war. The museum has posted the pictures, which are part of its collections, online and plans to publish many of the images in newspapers and online forums. You can visit the website and the gallery of photographs.

Museum officials hope to learn who the children are, what happened to them and help reconnect them to relatives who may also have been scattered. As the number of Holocaust survivors is dwindling with time, we all understand the urgency of this project. Please share this information with all of your constituencies, particularly the Survivor community with whom you all work so closely.

The last two days have been more than a little stressful for me. My daughter is spending five months doing volunteer work in Ashdod, Israel, and she called me on Tuesday evening to say that the air raid sirens had just gone off, but not to worry, she was safely ensconced in a local pub. Then, on Wednesday we got the horrific news of a bomb exploding across from the central bus station in Jerusalem, and later learned of one death and up to 40 more injuries, several of them critical. My daughter was scheduled to be in Jerusalem on Thursday. And, indeed, she did go to Jerusalem on Thursday, missing several other rockets landing in the Ashdod area. The schools are closed in Ashdod, as they are in Baltimore's sister city of Ashkelon, but, otherwise, life goes on, in what can only be described as a "new normal."

This week's parashah, Sh'mini, continues our reading in the Book of Leviticus. It is a book full of rituals and rules, many of which appear archaic to our modern practices, but which are described in great detail.  In Sh'mini we read of customs in the mishkan (and the unfortunate deaths of Aaron's two sons), as well as some of the laws of kashrut. Last week we read about sacrifices; before that it was slavery. How do we in 2011 relate to each of these commandments?

I don't know that we can relate to each commandment if we attempt to do so only literally. But, as we read the Torah as a whole, and think about the rhythms of life reflected in the rituals described, we can find comfort in our tradition that allows us to keep moving forward despite the stress and unpleasantness we may encounter. That is what has made Israel so resilient and what I have sensed in conversations with my daughter this week. I only hope that they return to the more mundane rituals of life soon.

May we all have a peaceful Shabbat and week to come.

Due Next Friday, April 1st.

We are so excited about the new TrailBlazer Award that we have extended the deadline for an additional week to allow even more agencies to participate. Submissions are now due to me no later than Friday, April 1stThank you to those who have sent in nominations. We look forward to receiving more submissions from our agencies in the coming week.

Google Groups Coming to AJFCA

We are putting the finishing touches on our new list serve system and should be ready to re-launch this valuable service to member agencies in the coming week!

We know that some agencies have continued to access the old list serves while other agencies have not been able to do so. In order to get the list serves back up and running for all of our members, we have decided to launch new Google Group Forums before we reveal AJFCA's new website.

The Google Group Forums will take the place of the old list serves. They will be linked to our current website and will then link to the new website once it is launched. Look for more information regarding the Google Groups next week, including steps to sign up and participate. Thank you once again for your patience through this process.

Important Documents Published on Programming for Youth

As an active member of the National Human Services Assembly, AJFCA is pleased to highlight two important documents recently published by NHSA. Their National Collaboration for Youth has released a national policy agenda, "Building a Brighter Future: An Essential Agenda for America's Young People" as well as a Brief on the impact of youth development programs on student academic success. Our agencies who provide youth programming may find both documents to be valuable resources.
