Local Issues, Global Solutions

One of the most valuable benefits of AJFCA membership is the opportunity to network with other Jewish human service agencies - to exchange information and resources, share similar experiences, and build each agency's capacity to serve its clients by incorporating the knowledge and expertise of colleagues throughout the United States and Canada. We also know that many of the issues addressed by our agencies and the challenges facing our clients are not unique to our two countries, but exist throughout the world in other communities.

In the past few weeks, I have reached out to organizations in other countries to explore the opportunities for our agencies to find more partners to increase our information-sharing network. I have had conversations with major Jewish social service agencies in London and Paris and, hopefully, in the next few months we will discover new ways to include some of them in our information-sharing. Additionally,  I just returned from Israel, where I had the opportunity to visit with a number of non-profit organizations that are addressing many of the same issues that AJFCA members see on a daily basis. Over the next few issues of the newsletter, we will be hearing about some of the important and innovative work these organizations are doing and start the process of expanding the breadth and depth of our network. I know that we can all learn from each other in ways that can only improve the quality of life for our clients and make us more efficient and successful organizations.

Update on List Serve Issue

We are informed by our website development firm that the malfunction of the list serve seems to result from a sudden incapatibility between the software that runs the list serve and the server that hosts our website.  There is no apparent reason for this to have happened and their efforts to resolve the problem have not yet worked.  They are currently looking into the possibility of restructuring the list serve and should have an update on this potential in the coming week.  We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and will keep working hard to resolve it as quickly as possible.

Early this past Monday morning, I was sitting outside my room at Mishkenot Sha'ananim in Jerusalem, watching the sun rise over the wall of the Old City.  It is an awesome and beautiful sight and it caused me to think about all of the generations before me who had witnessed a similar view.  And it also made me think about those who had never had the opportunity to step foot in Jerusalem, like my parents and all of the preceding generations of my family, and how fortunate I was to be there at that moment.  Fortunate personally to have the ability to travel and for my good fortune in living in a time when the State of Israel exists for me to visit and I could gaze out at the Old City without fear of an armed enemy.  Never is there a stronger feeling of being connected to the Israelites as they make their way to the "Promised Land."

And yet, in this week's parashah, Ki Tissa, the Israelites do their best to keep from ever making it to Israel.  Showing impatience and short-term memory loss, when Moses does not return immediately from receiving the Ten Commandments, the people threaten to revolt and Aaron instructs them on creating the golden calf.  Poor judgment leads to violent reaction, and Moses in despair destroys the set of tablets and three thousand of the transgressors lose their lives.  The story could have ended here.  But, God gives the people and Moses another opportunity.  Moses re-ascends the mountain, fasts for forty days and nights, and receives a second set of tablets which he brings to the people.  Although more trials lie ahead, the journey is resumed and the promise of a home for the Jewish people will be realized.

In the depths of despair of this story, we see the possibility of redemption.  It is not easy - there is much difficult work to be done in the journey.  But, the potential to see the sun rise in Jerusalem is there for all of us, both spiritually and in reality.  It is this potential that makes the work of our agencies so critical, for we bring to those we serve the possibility of redemption and the reality of their personal successes.

Enjoy a peaceful and restful Shabbat.

2011 AJFCA Annual Conference Update

"Thriving in the New Frontier"

Ann Zeller
Director of Meetings & Conferences

Guest Speaker: Gena Rotstein
Gena Rotstein

When you attend this year's annual AJFCA Conference in Calgary in May, you'll realize matchmaking services aren't exclusive to the "singles' scene," and that they do have a home in the world of philanthropy.

The founder of Canada's first inaugural philanthropic brokerage firm Dexterity Consulting, Gena Rotstein, has also been the innovative force behind Place2Give.com, the ground-breaking, on-line, donor-centered search-match-donate search engine. She has spent the past 15 years working, volunteering and fundraising for a variety of international and national non-profit groups and charities, and will be the guest speaker on Sunday, May 15th, at the session entitled Donor Development: It's More than Just a Thank You Note. She will also speak at the luncheon for Agency Development and Marketing Professionals at the conference.

In 2008, Gena launched Calgary-based Dexterity Consulting, which acts as a matchmaker to help donors select charities. Much more than simply telling people what to do with their money, her organization approaches philanthropy the same way a personal banking professional approaches wealth management-by aligning a client's social values with the philanthropic goals of a non-profit, and making sure that organization has the performance record to get the job done. Gena has been interviewed by, and written for, international newspapers and web columns on fundraising and philanthropy. She was recently named Top 40 Under 40 by Avenue Magazine, and was a presenter on TEDxCalgary. An on-going speaker at philanthropic events, she takes a new approach to an old section with "Philanthropy 3.0."

After earning her Masters of Arts in non-profit management and Jewish Communal Service by the time she was 24 from Brandies University in Boston, Gena worked in the non-profit section throughout Canada and the U.S., and eventually saw an opportunity to help solve one of the problems she identified in her industry-namely, that people often donate money to a charity without looking into its track record.

You'll find additional information on the sessions and speakers at the conference in upcoming e-newsletters.
