Birmingham Celebration

It was my pleasure this Tuesday evening to attend the Annual Meeting of Collat Jewish Family Services (CJFS) in Birmingham, AL.  The community congratulated outgoing president Marjorie Perlman and welcomed incoming president Dan Burnick.  Most of the evening was devoted to a celebration of Esther Schuster, who is retiring after many years of service to CJFS, the last fifteen as executive director.

Under Esther's leadership, CJFS has grown from a small program of the federation to one of the leading social service agencies in the Birmingham area.  The social hall was filled with former and current board members, volunteers, staff, and community members who have been touched by Esther's career and were there to say thanks.  AJFCA member agency executive directors Marlene Schillinger of JFS in Buffalo, NY and Ned Goldberg of JCRS in New Orleans, LA, long-time friends and colleagues of Esther, were surprise guests to share their personal recollections and best wishes.  In the AJFCA family, we will miss Esther's dedication to our mission and her willingness to share her knowledge and experience with executive directors everywhere.  We often called on Esther for her assistance and she never said no, much to our benefit.

I know that many of you want to join us in wishing Esther well in her much too early retirement.  And, you will have an opportunity to do so at the 2011 AJFCA Annual Conference.  Esther will be leading the Birmingham delegation to Calgary, so do not miss this opportunity to give her a hug and a word of thanks.

In last week's parashash, Yitro, we read about the powerful moment of revelation at Mt. Sinai.  Full of sound and fury, it is a scene of ultimate sensory and emotional overload.  And then, we come to this week's parashah, Mishpatim.  In contrast, this reading is more like a quiet discussion of laws that regulate the more routine actions and dealings of daily life.  Many of these commandments do not even seem relevant to us today - laws about treatment of slaves or dealing with lost oxen.  Others, like you "shall not oppress a stranger" are core to the way we strive to live our lives today and every day.

The juxtaposition of Mishpatim to Yitro is a lesson in itself.  Most moments are not overwrought with action and emotion, they are ordinary and not necessarily memorable.  Nevertheless, there is power in each of these moments.  The holiness of all of the commandments are what pervade our lives.  The work that our agencies do with their clients day after day may at times seem mundane, but it is infused with holiness as well.  Assisting others in facing the challenges of life is challenging and fulfilling.  It is also sacred work.

Performing a mitzvah does not have to be an act that requires a decision, it is an act that reflects the way we choose to live our lives.  So, a kind word to a stranger, being patient with someone with whom you disagree, or respecting the environment also can be sacred acts.  They do not result in great fanfare, but they do make our world a better place.

CEO Survey Coming this Week

Things are very exciting right now at AJFCA as we are currently launching two important initiatives.  Our website redevelopment has moved into the design stage and we are working on uploading content for our web designers to work with.  One of the signature elements of our new site will be a searchable directory of all of our member agencies by location as well as by service.  This will allow outside users to find a needed service in their local communities through the AJFCA website.  Accordingly, we need to update the contact information as well as the services provided by all of our members.  In addition, during the recent winter meetings, the Board of Directors of AJFCA determined that it is time to begin a strategic planning process for the Association.  As we prepare to launch this very important project, we would like to gather some general information on the work you do and the clients you serve.

In order to gather this important information, we will be sending a link to a short survey within the next week to all agency CEO's.  When you receive it, please respond to it at your earliest convenience.  Thank you as always for your participation.
