Webinars on Serving an Aging Jewish Community

The World Council of Jewish Communal  Service and the Jewish Communal Service Association of North America are co-sponsoring a series of three webinars entitled Serving an Aging Jewish Community: Global Perspectives.  The webinars are designed to facilitate an exchange of information and ideas on the work Jewish communities around the world are doing to serve their aging populations.  I will be moderating the second of the webinars on December 7, with presenters from France and Russia.  The entire series of webinars promises to be informative and engaging, and I invite you all to join.  Over fifty participants have already registered.  For those of you interested, please click here for details and a link to register.

Gulf Coast "faces"

Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services of Florida recently published a fabulous book entitled "faces."  The book is a compilation of stories and photographs of some of the many people served by the agency.  As the book's introduction notes, these "are stories of newly found hope, second chances, triumphs, and transformations."  Congratulations to Gulf Coast on this beautiful project and for all that they do in serving their community.

Bert Goldberg Takes Interim Position

Bert Goldberg, former CEO of AJFCA, has been named the interim executive director of the Monmouth County Jewish Federation.  Bert has been teaching two courses in the School of Social Work at Rutgers University, and he will continue that work while helping out his local federation.  Good luck to Bert as he leads his federation during this period.  For the full announcement, click here.

D'var Torah

With Thanksgiving around the corner, our thoughts naturally turn to family (and food).  I always look forward to getting together with my sister, brothers, cousins, aunts, nieces and nephews and doing a little catching up.  We all enjoy each other's company and I cannot recall a sour moment in the twenty-plus years we have been gathering.  What's wrong with us?  We could never have our own reality TV series.

Our Biblical ancestors are another case altogether.  In this week's parashah, Va-yishlah, we have Jacob reconnecting with his brother Esau, the horrible recounting of the rape of Dinah and its gory aftermath, and the death of Rachel after giving birth to Benjamin.  These folks make the Kardashians look like self-promoting projections of their own boring lives.  But yet, from this often fractured and fractious Biblical family a nation is born.

Amidst the surface turmoil of most of this parashah, we find the passage of Jacob's nighttime wrestling match.  Having taken his family across the river, Jacob is alone until he is engaged in the struggle with "a man."  There has been much debate about the identity of Jacob's foe, but the fact that he has isolated himself from his family on this crucial night cannot be overlooked.  Jacob's struggle is a time for self-reflection that results in a changed man, with the new name of Israel.

As we gather with our own families for Thanksgiving or some other future holiday, enjoy the group, hopefully stay away from any unpleasantness, and steal a little time for self-reflection.  Perhaps we can all continue to change for the better.

Have a peaceful Shabbat and a fulfilling Thanksgiving.
