| Rev. Al Valentine Becomes Member of Mackinac Presbytery | |
By Ruling Elder, Marilyn Kelley
| |
Rev. Al Valentine and Members of Church of the Redeemer, Manistique | d for permanent membership in the Presbytery of Mackinac in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
Rev. Valentine is an ordained member of another Christian church and is serving as the Teaching Elder in the Church of the Redeemer and Gould City Presbyterian churches. Because his ordination is in the Grace Brethren Fellowship,a denomination that is not in correspondence with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A), the Committee on Preparation for Ministry required Rev. Valentine to meet the requirements of G.20505, G.20607 and G.2.0610. in the Book of Order.
To meet these requirements, the Committee on Preparation for Ministry conducted an oral examination of Rev. Valentine. This examination covered all parts of the standard ordination exams, namely Theology, Polity, Worship, Sacraments, and Bible Exegesis.
Rev. Valentine successfully completed this examination and the Committee on Preparation for Ministry recommended to Presbytery that he be examined on the floor of Presbytery. This was successfully completed and the Rev. Albert Valentine II was approved for permanent membership in the Presbytery of Mackinac in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
Presbytery Moderator Kenneth Visser invited members of the Manistique and Gould City churches to come forward for prayer and the laying on of hands. Rev. Valentine was welcomed by members of the Presbytery. |

Alma College Resonates at Detroit Opera House
More than 1,200 people attended Alma College's presentation of "Resonance: A Celebration of the Performing Arts" concert that took place March 12 at the historic Detroit Opera House.
The performance featured the Alma College Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Pipe Band and Highland Dancers. They were joined on stage by more than 250 high school singers from the metro Detroit area for a dramatic musical finale.
The performance was designed to serve a trio of functions. A recruitment event, alumni party and College visibility initiative all wrapped together, "Resonance" put Alma College front and center for one afternoon in Detroit.
"The Alma Choir has always been a microcosm of Alma College - choir members are also scholars and athletes, and they are part of all the things that make Alma College such an exciting place," said Will Nichols, director of choirs. "We know that a sizeable percentage of high school seniors are looking for a college that allows them to continue their active involvement in the arts. 'Resonance' was an important step in the College's effort to introduce college-bound students to what their lives could be like at Alma College."
Joining the performance were Alma's 30-member Percussion Ensemble and the College's Highland arts ensembles - the bagpipe band and Kiltie Dancers.
"This was a fantastic opportunity to perform in an excellent venue for an audience keen on hearing good music," said Dave Zerbe, director of the percussion ensemble.

Former mission workers translate Scriptures with Africans
The Anuak people of Ethiopia will have a complete Bible in their native tongue for the first time thanks to the work of Presbyterian mission personnel and their Ethiopian colleagues. Marie "Breezy" Lusted and Niles Reimer, now retired from mission service, began the translation effort in the 1970s and have guided it to completion. The first copies of the Anuak Bible are expected to roll off the press this year. Read more →

Great Ministry Practices
Rabun Gap Presbyterian Church in Northern Georgia is opening doorways with their food ministry. This small but determined church now provides 12,000 pounds of food to over 300 families every month. In meeting the needs of their community, they have experienced amazing growth - going from 22 on any given Sunday morning to two services with 150+ in attendance. They continue to seek new ways to engage their community and share the good news of Jesus Christ by starting a backpack ministry that feeds school children over the weekend.
We want to hear from YOU! In what ways is your presbytery or synod working to grow Christ's church in new ways? Email me your stories or ideas. |
