State Parks - New York's "best idea"

You Can Help
I hope you're enjoying filmmaker Ken Burns's six-part series on the national parks airing this week on PBS. It's bringing lots of attention to America's "best idea" - its national park system.

Let's not forget, however, that we have a very special park system here in New York, too.  And like our national park system it's threatened by chronic underfunding and recent budget cuts.

Our 213 state parks and historic sites comprise the oldest and one of the most magnificent and varied state park systems in the nation.  Who wouldn't agree that Niagara Falls, Letchworth, Saratoga Spa, Minnewaska, and Jones Beach are truly unique national treasures?

They're also an economic asset.  A recent Parks & Trails New York study found that state parks annually return to the state more than $5 for every $1 invested - totaling nearly $2 billion in economic benefits.

Another great thing about our state parks - they're close to home!  Unlike Yosemite and Yellowstone, state parks are no more than an hour or two from most New Yorkers.

We can't take our parks for granted

Despite their many benefits, state parks are in jeopardy. They are suffering from decades of underinvestment, with a $650 million backlog of maintenance and infrastructure needs.

Budget and staff cuts over the last two years have resulted in reduced programs, maintenance and hours.  Any further cuts will inevitably result in park closings.

What you can do

Visit a state park this weekend and enjoy the fall colors. Then contact Governor Paterson and your state senator and assemblyperson to let them know parks are important to you.  Urge them to invest in state parks... for our health, our economy, and our quality of life, for now and generations to come.

You can make a difference!

Thank you.
