Tibbits Summer Theatre 2010

After much thought and planning, as well as input from our online survey, the 2010 Tibbits Summer Theatre season is set. We think we have another outstanding line up to satisfy your thirst for great theatre, great songs and an extra dose of laughter.

GPB 09

Opening the season on June 24 is On Broadway: A Modern Songbook, a brand new musical revue featuring Broadway's best from the past 25 years. The show will include many of Broadway's new classics from shows not easily staged at the Tibbits including Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Starlight Express and Phantom of the Opera.

Next up, starting July 8 is Crazy for You, the show billed as the brand new Gershwin musical. Great songs by the incomparable George and Ira Gershwin are woven together with a new story by Ken Ludwig. Tibbits audiences have enjoyed other Ludwig plays, Moon Over Buffalo and Lend Me a Tenor. The pairing of Gershwin and Ludwig guarantees entertainment for young and old alike.

TST 09 HairIf you enjoyed last summer's Leading Ladies you won't want to miss this year's farce Run for Your Wife opening July 22. A British taxi driver manages to juggle two wives and two homes well enough until a traffic accident leaves him at the hospital trying to explain two addresses and two families.

TST 09 ILYFinally, the season wraps up with the musical comedyThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee which opens August 11. The hilarious story follows six young outsiders vying to be the spelling champion. The show is reminiscent of Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up. It includes audience participation and a Tony-Award winning book and was the second highest scoring shows on our survey. (Chicago scored the highest but is still not available.)

Strega Nona-The Pasta's Piling Up!

Pasta potA magical pasta pot, a boy who forgets to listen, and a town overrun with pasta combine into a story sure to satisfy your hunger for laughter and fun when "Strega Nona and the Magic Pasta Pot," comes to Tibbits Thursday, Feb. 4.

Strega Nona, Italian for grandma witch, has a magical pasta pot that only she can control. When she decides to find someone to help her keep her little house and garden, she puts up a sign in the town square. Big Anthony, who doesn't pay attention, comes to work for her. Strega Nona gives him the list of chores to do and tells him what he must not do; he must never touch her magic pasta pot. Come see what silliness ensues when Big Anthony does not listen to Strega Nona's warning!

The play produced by Wild Swan Theater is based on a traditional tale as told in Tomie dePaola's Caldecott Honor book.

This children's performance is presented by Tibbits Young Audiences (TYA). In addition to the 6:30 pm public performance, there will be school performances offered earlier in the day. Tickets for adults are $9 and students are $7.

Annual Meeting

Tibbits members, patrons and the community are invited to the annual meeting of the Tibbits Opera Foundation and Arts Council, Inc. at 5:30 Thursday, January 28.

The meeting is a look back on the 2008-09 fiscal year. In addition to the financial report and the review of the year, four members will be elected to the board, each for a three year term. A reception beginning at 5 pm will be followed by the annual meeting.

Because the theatre will be busy with the musical Two by Two, the meeting will be held at the CHC Community Care and Conference Center, 370 E Chicago St (the former K-Mart building)
