St. Guinefort and the cult of gullibility
Dan Stephen of Bourbon was not an easy man to surprise. A 13th-century Dominican heresy hunter, Stephen thought he had encountered every weird religious idea and superstition floating around the countryside of France.

But near the city of Lyons one day, he came across something that seemed novel, even to him. "When preaching there against sorcery and hearing confessions," he later wrote, "I heard many women confess that they had carried their children to St. Guinefort." At first Stephen thought Saint Guinefort must be a local saint. He asked around and soon discovered Guinefort's shrine - and the startling news that St. Guinefort was a dog.  Click here to read more
