Experience the Sweet Sounds of the Calliope

It has just been announced that our very own, very talented, Victoria Banks will be serenading us with a performance on her 'Calliope' at our Free Day, Sunday May 20, 2012.

The Calliope is a
Circus Organ, it is a Magnificent, Irritating, Stupendous, Noisy, Beautiful, Fantastic Musical instrument.

It was used in By-gone days to lead the Circus Parade from the Train Yards through the Towns, Villages and Hamlets to Circus Grounds throughout America.

You will be further rewarded for the rest of your life by forever hearing the soft strains of Calliope Music with your newly impaired hearing.

This Event alone is worth ten times the price of the Free Ticket.  Don't miss this, perhaps, a once in a life time experience.

The season opens with a FREE day, 12:00 noon- 4:00 pm for Residents of Sanilac County, people who work in Sanilac County, but live elsewhere, and anyone who says they are a friend of Dr. Loop!

The buildings will be open with costumed docents, and there will be a food tent for a light lunch.

All the Good News about Port Sanilac!
Greetings!

Business doors are open, menus are full of local fare, and the Village of Port Sanilac is sprucing itself up in anticipation of what promises to be a great season!

The Huron Shores Golf Club has undergone a few changes this season. Be sure to stop in and enjoy the new and improved menu and dining experience! Of course, the golfing is as good as it gets, with incredible scenery to boot!

The Port Sanilac Bait & Sporting Goods shop have been energized by the upward trend in good fishing her
e on the east coast of Michigan. It seems everyone can learn a thing or two from these guys...they are incredibly passionate about seeing Port Sanilac thrive throughout the seasons...and insightful as to how local businesses can help one another.

Uri's Landing has added a new chef and bartender. It's always been a lively place, but there's a new leaf turning over, and I encourage all to stop in for a fine dinner and spirited cocktail sometime soon!

Take a stroll down to the Farmers' Market this month, over to our new Visitor's Center down by the harbor while enjoying the Blessing of the Fleet festivities, and up to Bake Krazy for their Memorial Day opening. And last, but not least...keep an eye out for our new Village Banners that will be going up soon. They will be partnered with new perennial plantings around town.

Help Expand our Visitor's Center!!

OK, Port Sanilac Supporters, it's time to show how much you care about our community!

The DDA has submitted an entry in a contest that's sponsored by "Let's Save Michigan," a state-wide organization that's trying to improve Michigan's future. Between now and June 1, our votes will help select 10 finalists from among 45 entries. Anyone may vote, and each email address may submit one vote each day.

Our project is an expanded Visitor Center, using what's now the clubhouse in the Harbor Commission building at the end of Main Street. To vote, go to this website: http://letssavemichigan.com/placemaking-contest Each entry is shown with a representative image -- ours is simply a drawing of the clubhouse room. The Port Sanilac Visitor Center is on page 2 (click the '2' following the Current Top Projects) and in the fourth row.

Once you click our image, you will see a write-up about the project and a blue box in the upper right corner that says Vote for this Project. Enter your email address and click "Vote" to register your support. Remember, you can repeat these steps once each day until June 1.

Please forward this note to your friends and family, and ask them to participate too. We're up against some large communities, so it will be extra challenging to keep our entry in the top ten.

If you have trouble with the instructions, you can email me or call me at 248-444-6927.

Thanks for your support!

Southern Lake Huron Assessment: Charting the Course for the Bluewater Coast

Michigan's changing economy and Lake Huron's declining Chinook salmon fishery have negatively impacted the coastal communities of Michigan's Thumb. Historically, individual port towns and coastal businesses in the Thumb Area have worked in isolation. However, a regional assessment could help communities work collaboratively to adapt to these changes and challenges. This project is bringing together researchers, natural resource and tourism professionals, and community leaders to assess current conditions and identify opportunities.

The main focal question being addresses is How can the natural and cultural resources of Lake Huron and its coast be enhanced and leveraged to benefit residents and visitors of the Thumb Area, support local economies, and maintain environmental quality?

This project focuses on the coastal region of the Thumb Area (inland from Lake Huron about 15 miles) from Port Huron and around to Quanicassee. Tuscola, Huron, Sanilac and St. Clair counties are included.

The Southern Lake Huron Assessment aims to provide practical information that can guide planning related to tourism, recreation, community development and natural resources in the Thumb Area. These fact sheets summarize different aspects of the assessment, including economic and scientific research. They have been made relevant to the Thumb region by incorporating feedback from academic researchers, local professionals and communications specialists. Additional resources will be posted as the project concludes in 2012.

The southern Lake Huron coast is a fantastic setting for outdoor exploration. Promoting the region's natural assets can help build vibrant communities and support local economies.

In our May newsletter we will focus on Fishing. Port Sanilac's local Bait and Sporting Goods shop tracked me down and requested that we, as a community, bring light to how important our fishing industry is to our local economy and community. Please take a look at the following links for information on the changing face of our fishing environment here on the east coast of Michigan.

Sunset Cruise and Big Band Sounds added to 2012 Port Sanilac Antique Boat Show

Antique Boat
Remember the days of mahogany decks and rumbling tailpipes cruising the rivers and lakes? They are returning to Port Sanilac!

Port Sanilac is hosting its 4th Annual Antique Boat Show, Friday and Saturday, August 10 and 11. This two-day event is a showcase for wooden-hulled and classic boats from Michigan and Ontario.

This year's show is again sponsored with the cooperation of the Michigan Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society, part of the national Antique Classic Boat Society (ACBS). Funding was also made possible through the Port Sanilac DDA and a donation from the Port Sanilac Harbor Commission. Corporate sponsorships from Blue Water Sports Bar & Grill, Tubbs Brothers Ford Mercury Chrysler Jeep, and Hagerty Insurance, Vintage Marine Division add to the success of this year's schedule.

"Each year we try to add a new attraction," noted Bill Thomas, event chair. "This year, thanks to Music at the Harbor, Bill Dembrock and his Big Band will play great swing-dance tunes from the '30s, '40s, and '50s on Saturday night."

The Antique Boat Show, an in-water and on-land display of boats are complimented again this year with other antiques on wheels. The Port Sanilac Vintage Motorcycle Rally, sponsored by Michigan Vintage & Retro, promises to be much larger than last year.

"We already have heard from a number of vintage bike owners that have reserved the date to be a part of this year's show," noted coordinator, Dick Roth of Caseville. "We could easily see double what we had last year."
