All the Good News about Port Sanilac!
Greetings!

With such a strange winter for our region this year, you just might find a four leafed clover in the grass in March.

If winter is your thing, I wish you luck in finding a few perfectly snowy days for a sledding adventure.

And if you're like me, and can't wait for the sounds and textures of spring, I wish you luck in finding soft soil and fragrant spring flowers.

And for all those men, who carefully draped the tools and the mower months ago, I wish you luck in finding the right tool at the right moment, rust-free.

Most Sincerely,
Jennifer Powell

Kite Festival Takes Off in 2012!

This year's Kite Festival welcomes the Windjammers International Kite Performance Team to St. Mary's field.  Yet another great event taking place during Port Sanilac's Summer Festival Weekend!

Windjammers is a professional kite team with each pilot flying tight acrobatic maneuvers and formations similar to those flown by the Blue Angels.
Their routines are choreographed with music, with upward of 40 plus kite in the sky at once! They will be taking center field at 2:00pm, you won't want to miss this performance!

In the past they have performed at numerous demonstrations around the U.S., Canada and Europe. (Michigan Hot Air Balloon Challenge, "Kite on Ice" Madison, WI, Miami International Kite Festival, Detroit City Air show, Livonia Spree, Three Rivers Fest Fort Wayne Indiana and Detroit Jazz Fest... just to to name a few.)

You can find additional information on the team on their website www.windjammerskiteteam.com or on YouTube at
www.youtube.com/use/windjammerone
.

Check them out, then pack up your kite, and meet us at St. Mary's field July 28th at noon!
Dirty Hands and Daffodils

It takes many helping hands to make a difference.

When we care about our community, we invest in it, and when we invest in it, we tend to take better care of it. So let's talk flowers.

Port Sanilac's Beautification Sub-Committee is putting a plan together to brighten up our downtown this year. It may seem like a simple project, planting flowers, but there are many important measures to be taken into consideration to ensure that what we invest blooms to it's fullest potential.

There has been incredible work done by caring and dedicated volunteers in past years. They harness invaluable knowledge of our street-scape, that many of us may never think twice about. But it is what our visitors set their eyes upon as they wander from the Harbor, to the Market, to the Museum and back again.  It seems that we need to join forces, reach out and recruit, and implement some good ol' community action.

A healthy foundation is paramount. That means replacing the salt-ridden soil in our sidewalk boxes with fresh, nutrient rich soil. That's gonna take some helping hands! Next comes the planting. Whether planting perennials that will come back stronger every year, sprucing up and around the bulbs we already have in place, or kindly accepting donations of backyard lilies, tulips, and daffodils...well, that gonna take some helping hands! Once the flowers are in place, and we are sitting back soaking in the abundant colors of spring, we must quench by watering and tend by weeding. And must I say, that's gonna take some helping hands!

Look at the opportunities beyond just a community project. What a great way to teach a younger generation about science, the environment, or the importance of community service. What better way to get out and get a little exercise, regardless of if you're 10 years or 62 years old.  Whether you just want to get out in the sun for a bit with your neighbor, or just can't help but help, we look forward to seeing you out there!

For more information on how to become involved with the beautification of downtown Port Sanilac contact:
Jennifer Powell, DDA Coordinator by email at info@portsanilac.net or, by phone, at (810) 488-1288.

Consider an Event Committee
Bobo the Clown

Planning events is no small feat! Port Sanilac is lucky to have dedicated volunteers that help our festivals take shape, our fireworks explode, and our concerts rock! But as we build upon our successes and look to expand our proverbial 'show', we find those few organizers saddled with quite a bit of work.

Maybe you are a summer resident, but have time on your hands during the colder months (our planning season!) or perhaps you are a seasoned volunteer looking to take on a more active role. We have many events this year that could use your help! Consider joining an event committee, recommending your can-do neighbor, or leading the efforts by becoming a chairperson. Your talents and energy are what we're looking for.

If red, white, and blue is your thing, consider becoming a chairperson for one of our Independence Day Events (5k, softball tournament, parade, or fireworks). Perhaps you're a foodie, and support all things local...the Port Sanilac Farmers' Market is always looking for volunteers to help with workshops, music at the market, fundraising events, and market set up. And our Summer Festival has a myriad of exciting to-dos, from children's games to a Jimmy Buffet Tribute Show. Come be part of a rockin' good time for the whole family!

Fundraising to coordination to chaperoning a bouncy tent, we're looking for a few good leaders....could that be you?
