Greetings!
Can you smell spring yet? Mother nature has thrown us for a loop here and there, and kept most of the snow to herself lately, hasn't she? Maybe she will throw a chillier day out there around the 14th so the lovebirds can cuddle close on Valentine's Day! Meanwhile, the DDA has been preparing for spring full steam ahead! Events are being posted and welcome guides organized knowing that our visitors like to plan ahead!
Planning for the beautification of our downtown area is rolling right along as well. Signs of spring should include newly painted lamp posts and native perennials for our flower boxes.
Coordination with our larger community is also essential to ensure a productive springtime season! Community focal points, like our Museum, Farmers' Market, and Local Businesses are being brought to light while meeting with community and tourism partners to keep our treasures in the spotlight for all to see far and wide.
Speaking of treasures...Grab your sweetheart and head out to Tom Forager's Valentine's Day Concert at the Museum, treat that man of yours to a Stone Lodge Steak, or brush up your skills and sign up for Blue Water Sports Bar's Pool Tournament this month. Whatever your plans, spread the love locally!
Most Sincerely,
Jennifer Powell
Coordinator, Port Sanilac DDA

Fire Hall Park Planned for Port Sanilac
by Linda Berk Voit
It started in 1942, when the Oldfield Family sold a piece of their land adjacent to Port Sanilac's current fire station. The price tag of $1 was in exchange for a promise to create a public park once owned and operated by this historic family. Three attempts to carry out this promise have been met with obstacles ranging from finances to natural resource issues. However, thanks to tenacious wills and knowledgeable townsfolk, these challenges are being met with plans to carry out this vision.
Just ask committee chairperson and village resident, Gale Travis. Diligently, he has spent countless hours working with local, county & state officials to shift through available grants, resources and building requirements in order to bring this project to fruition. "We're in Phase I of the boundary construction plans & approval process. It's been an exciting learning curve and thanks to my committee and the professional services of architects and personnel from our village, county and state agencies, we have plans and timelines ready to go".
Gale has written and received available state grants for most of the project, with matching funds available. It's now time to ask for formal bids on certain production elements as well as asking for volunteers to help with specific tasks, monies in donations or gifts in kind. It's a great opportunity for community groups and/or residents who have time and talent to come forth and help with specific mini projects within the scope of work for the park effort."
The plans include a restroom facility, plaza and information station to display maps and guides to the area, a tennis/pickle ball court and to maintain the current designated area for the summer famers' market. Structures will replicate Port Sanilac's historic village buildings.
Gale's committee has been meeting once a month to help with the project but now it time for more community involvement. If you think you or your community group can help with this project, contact Linda Voit, committee member, at lindavoit@att.net
