Port Sanilac Harbor Master Hosts a Blessing of the Fleet | |
The Blessing of the Fleet is being hosted by Port Sanilac Harbor Master, Dave Marschall, on May 30, 2011, at 12:00 o'clock noon.
Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities. The practice is predominantly Catholic and a blessing from the local priest was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season.
This year's traditional blessing will be by Father Don Eppenbrock from St. Mary Church in Port Sanilac. Along with the blessing will be a musical presentation by the Sanilac Symphonic Band directed by Bob Dean and assisted by Music Manager Joan Juhl. Some thirty band members are expected to play. Additionally, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Port Sanilac Post 8872, are to present a gun salute. Also included in the ceremonies, TAPS will be played by students from Carsonville Port Sanilac schools.
The Blessing is expected to last approximately 30 minutes and will be followed by a short concert by the Sanilac Symphonic Band.
It is hoped that this celebration will be continued and expanded in the summers to come. |
