| December has arrived, but we're still waiting for winter. After our mild summer we seem to be scheduled for a mild winter to match.
The Christmas decorations are up downtown and all of the stores are stocked with wonderful gifts for your friends and families. And while you're assembling your shopping list don't forget to include a few gift certificates from our wonderful dining establishments, they make great stocking stuffers.
The DDA would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. We look forward to seeing you in the next year. |
| Mary's Diner - a Small Town Institution |
If you've lived in Port Sanilac you have, no doubt, eaten at Mary's Diner. This small town eatery is a mainstay of the Port Sanilac downtown. Established as the Blue Moon Diner in the early 50s, the diner provides a center for community gatherings. The name was changed to Mary's Diner in the mid-70s.
Purchased by Gina Crothers in March of 1998, Mary's is known for its excellent breakfasts and fair prices. Gina enjoys cooking her signature dishes including Chicken Marsala and the regional favorite - perch. In the fall you can get Gina's pumpkin pancakes. Each day there are lunch and dinner specials and a fresh soup-of-the-day. Mary's also sells excellent pizza for dine-in and carry-out.
This restaurant serves as a center for social life in Port Sanilac. Daily you can find groups gathered to share news and companionship. Everyone from the local mechanic to the fire chief can be found enjoying Gina's hospitality. If you want to find out what's happening around town Mary's is the place to start looking.
Gina faces the many challenges of running a business in our tight economy. Putting the customer first is one way that she continues to bring people back. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere of Mary's Diner is sure to charm each visitor that comes through the doors.
Stop into Mary's Diner during the month of December with the attached coupon (see below) and receive $1.00 off each meal (limit one per person). Be sure to let Gina know that you read about her wonderful establishment in the Port Sanilac Portal. |

| The Vacationing Housewives |
If you happened to be at the Music at the Harbor, Zydeco Ziggie concert on August 29 you may have noticed a small scale invasion staged by the Vacationing Housewives of Sanilac County. These five ladies came from near and far to spend their summer vacation in Port Sanilac and exploring the surrounding area.
The women are cousins, (except for "honorary cousin Karyn" who enjoys traveling with the group) and still have family that live in the area. Karyn Oncu, Peggy Wantuck, Joyce Harrar Smith, Nancy Ballantine and Jean Foutch (pictured left to right), try to travel together at least once a year. This past summer they considered going to Holland, Michigan, but instead found a wonderful rental home right on Lake Street in Port Sanilac. Coming in from Seattle, Washington, Joyce normally brings a gift of chocolates or coffee for everyone. This year she was inspired by the memories of her mother and aunts and brought housecoats instead. These comfy coveralls were worn by the women's mothers and stirred many wonderful memories, so in their honor the Vacationing Housewives donned them on their adventures around the county.
Together they took in the various sites of Sanilac County. Top on the list was a visit to the Swinging Bridge in Croswell followed by a stop in the Applegate Bar. Here they savored the memories of drinking orange soda with their grandparents at that very spot.
Also on the agenda was a trip to visit family and a new set of twin girls. The Harrar family has three generation of twins. They were photographed together and featured in the Sanilac County News.
The road trips were punctuated with bar-b-ques and bonfires at their rental home. The "girls" visited Harbor Park for the Zydeco Ziggie concert, snagging seats right down front. Their housecoats caused quite a scene and they were invited on stage to have their photograph taken with Ziggie.
Everywhere they went they created a sensation with their housecoats. People shared stories of their own mothers and the memories they had of similar outfits. The ladies enjoyed the attention and silliness so much that they now intend to take their housecoats on all of their travels and continue their adventures as The Vacationing Housewives.
Go to YouTube to see a short video of their adventures in Sanilac County. | |
