Port Sanilac Portal
All the Good News about Port Sanilac

Greetings!

A chill is in the air and the leaves are starting to turn, we have entered one of the most beautiful seasons that Port Sanilac has to offer - fall.  In the next few weeks plan your time to include a color tour through the Thumb.  The leaves look to be spectacular this year and the fields have turned to a lovely golden color. If your boat is still in the water take an afternoon to cruise along the shore and see the fall colors from that angle.  However you visit us you're sure to enjoy your time in Port Sanilac.  And don't forget to email your pictures of Port Sanilac in her fall glory to info@portsanilac.net, you may see them in this newsletter or on our website!
Big Changes Come to This 'n' That
As its name implies, This 'n' That is a resale shop in downtown Port Sanilac that sells a collection of items ranging from linens to DVDs and from sporting goods to antiques.  Many of our readers will be familiar with these facts, but do they know what's been happening behind the doors of this special shop?

The first change you may notice about the store is the face-lift it received this summer in the form of a beautiful new paint job!  But more important is the second change...

This 'n' ThatAlthough the This 'n' That has been open for business for many years during the summer months, it has been closed for the winter.  This year that is changing.  The owners, Ron and Carol Marlow, have gone into partnership with the owners of Old Fire House Gifts in Deckerville; and through that partnership the store will be open year 'round.

Old Fire House Gifts has leased a portion of the storefront, from which they will be selling new gift items.  They will also be selling This 'n' That's traditional fare, while the Marlows enjoy their semi-retirement in Florida.  This arrangement is beneficial not only to the two owners, but to the people and visitors of Port Sanilac.  The convenience of having this establishment open year round cannot be overlooked.

So, the next time you're in town stop by the store to say hello to the new shop keepers and maybe find a treasure or two while you visit.

This 'n' That is located at 19 S. Ridge St. in Port Sanilac.  Its hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.
Boo Fest - Family Fun for All

ScarecrowThe Boo Fest is back for another year with fun for the entire family.  Saturday, October 17, from 10 am to 3 pm, the Sanilac County Historical Museum will be hosting the Boo Fest.

This year families will be able to compete in the scarecrow building contest (bring your own clothes and props; stands and straw will be provided - judging at noon, prizes at 2 pm), have their fortunes read by Madam Olga (11 am - 2 pm), and compete in a pedal tractor pull (noon - 2 pm).  Other events include face painting (11 am - 2 pm), a straw scramble (different age groups starting at 10:30 am), and doughnut on-a-string (11 am - 1:30 pm).

During the rest of October residents and visitors can admire the scarecrows designed and displayed by businesses all throughout town.  The Boo Fest committee sells scarecrow kits to each business and the businesses then compete for the annual "Best Scarecrow" prize.  The winner gets bragging rights until the following year.

So take some time this fall to come on out and enjoy the Boo Fest with your family!

Discover the Blue - Discover Port Sanilac

Despite all the negatives we hear about economic opportunities in Michigan there are still areas of growth and Port Sanilac is already a part of one of those industries.  Tourism.

Port Sanilac is located conveniently close to the greater Detroit area, yet is still far enough away to be an entirely new world for city dwellers and suburbanites.  Port Sanilac is an undiscovered treasure.

Now we pose the questions:  How do we let people know about this treasure? and How do weDiscover the Blue Logo bring them, and their tourism dollars, here?  The DDA was presented with a unique opportunity to address these challenges just one year ago.  That's when the Discover the Blue tourism campaign started for Port Sanilac and eight other lakeshore communities

One year ago, Marci Fogel of the Blue Water Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), announced that the CVB was developing a dynamic new advertising tool for the Thumb and wanted to include us.  This advertising project was to be known as Discover the Blue, with the concept to join the lakeside communities from Algonac to Port Austin into a coalition for advertising the entire area as the Shores of Eastern Michigan.  This would allow us, as a collaboration, to make a much bigger impact in tourism advertising.  The DDA recognized the potential and dedicated $5,000 to include Port Sanilac.

The $5,000 spent for this campaign was initially to provide:
    -  an additional welcome guide for the area,
    -  a large scale advertisement within AT&T phone books throughout 14 Michigan counties,
    -  an advertisement in Midwest Living magazine, and
    -  presence on the Discover the Blue website (www.bluewater.org).
Very quickly the campaign grew to include much more!

The Discover the Blue/Shores of Eastern Michigan campaign formed a partnership with the Pure Michigan campaign (www.michigan.org) which made the Blue Water Area a Featured Destination on the Pure Michigan website and a included the area in a Tim Allen Pure Michigan radio ad!

The Pure Michigan campaign has been awarded as the number one tourism campaign in the country!  Through our affiliation with Pure Michigan, the hits on the Discover the Blue website expanded from 11,546 in the summer of 2008 to 87,658 in the summer of 2009!  That is over 87,000 times that people were exposed to the name Port Sanilac and were able to easily access more information about us!

In conjunction with the hits to the website, over 4,000 visitor guides were sent directly to people who requested them on the website.  Those are requests from people who are looking for a place to spend their vacation and are now being introduced to Port Sanilac and the beautiful Eastern shoreline!

In addition to the welcome guide mailings and the web exposure Discover the Blue was able to invest in a variety of other advertising opportunities.
    -  40,000 Discover the Blue welcome guides were distributed throughout the states of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana
    -  Advertisements were placed in numerous publications, including Michigan Living, Parade Magazine, Long Weekends, and many others.  These publications had a circulation of over 3.4 million issues!

As you can see, the Discover the Blue/Shores of Eastern Michigan campaign has brought a lot of attention to our area!  Although it is hard to measure the success of an advertising campaign in direct dollars, the DDA understands and appreciates the indirect dollars being spent in our community.
Because of the success of the 2008-2009 campaign, the DDA is renewing the contract with the Blue Water CVB and our name will again be spread across the region, the country, and even the world.

DDA Looks to the Future

The Port Sanilac DDA is looking to the future of Port Sanilac and is seeking out new ideas for Telescope how to help our downtown improve and grow.

On the list of current ideas is the renewal of the facade grant program.  Currently the DDA marketing committee is developing a system for granting requests for facade improvement grants.  It is the intention of the committee to have the guidelines and applications completed prior to budgeting time this spring so that funds can be allocated to renew that project.

Another idea being circulated is the possibility of bringing small (150 foot) cruise ships to our harbor in an effort to bring more tourists to the area.  If this idea proves to be fruitful we may have upwards of 300 people weekly, disembarking on our docks to spend their time and money with us.

A classic car show, which will be a weekend long event, has been proposed for the upcoming summer.  The Antique Boat Show was a popular event and hopes to repeat that success next year.  The Farmers' Market is anticipating writing a grant to have a permanent structure erected, thus making the market more customer friendly and handicapped accessible.  Along with the Farmers' Market building the DDA would like to build a permanent Welcome Center with public restrooms.

If you have ideas or concepts that you would like to share with the DDA please attend one of our regularly scheduled meetings - the second Wednesday of every month, 7 pm at the Bark Shanty Community Center.
