Greetings! |
With the passing of Memorial Day, summer has officially started in Port Sanilac. Stay tuned to the Port Sanilac Portal for all the latest news on the happenings and going-ons in Port Sanilac! |
Port Sanilac's Growing Downtown |

If you have visited Port Sanilac recently you may have noticed the new construction in our downtown. Blaine Investments, owned by David and Judy Blaine, have begun work on the new laundromat. Located directly across from Raymond Hardware (also owned by David and Judy Blaine). The Port Sanilac Coin Laundry is expected to open in July.
The Blue Water Inn is also undergoing some dramatic changes. Currently the interior of the building is being gutted and remodeled into multiple storefronts and a sports bar. The exterior of the building will soon be returning to its historic roots.
The Village of Port Sanilac was the recipient of a Historical Renovation Grant which will allow the blue facade to be removed, returning the building to its original soft, yellow brick. Work on the exterior of the building is expected to begin early this summer.
The first business to come to the Blue Water Inn is the Birds & Bees Nursery. This store features original designs of collectible baby dolls so realistic they will fool even the most observant mothers. You can see examples of these wonderful dolls at www.juliemalloydolls.com.
The Northwest corner property, formerly home to the Ride-on Caf, will also be seeing development this summer. This property was purchased by Lavdas Management and is set to be developed into a street-front shopping center. Plans include a coffee shop and small boutique stores.
The old general store on the Southeast corner of downtown will soon be home to the Port Sanilac Co. This group of local artisans will be selling everything from beach toys to antiques. With a "something for everyone" concept the Port Sanilac Co. will be the place to get beautiful artwork for your home or inexpensive souvenirs for your kids. The Port Sanilac Co. will also house the Port Sanilac Welcome Center.
So come to Port Sanilac and see how our small town is growing. While you're here stop into the Welcome Center and pick up our new Welcome Guide and Walking Map. |

2nd Annual Community Auction and Antique Fair |
The 2nd Annual Community Auction and Antique Fair, held at the Stone Lodge over Memorial Day weekend, was a great success, raising almost $1,000 for the Bark Shanty Festival. The day was hampered by bad weather, but people from around the county showed up to bid on donated and consigned items during the auction. Because of the bad weather there were fewer bidders so many people went home with fabulous deals.
Special thanks is due to Jan Wallace for organizing and running the antique show. A variety of vendors showed wonderful items from our past and offered antique appraisals. Although the crowds were light the show was great. We're looking forward to having all the vendors and more back next year.
The 3rd Annual Community Auction and Antique Fair will take place at the Stone Lodge over Memorial Day weekend 2010. See you there!

Port Sanilac's Farmers' Market
The place to shop on Friday evenings! |
The Port Sanilac Farmers' Market has started with a bang! On Friday, May 22, from 3pm - 7pm, eight vendors began selling their wares at the Port Sanilac Farmers' Market. The first 50 visitors to the market were surprised with a gift of a pansy from the week's featured vendor, Lanny Babcock. Vendors sold everything from pastured-raised pork to honey, flowers and garden plants to early produce (chives, rhubarb, asparagus), and farm fresh eggs to hand-made crafts (birdhouses and garden decorations).
On Friday, May 29th the Farmers' Market had three new vendors, including the Sanilac County Humane Society. The featured vendor of the week was Neil and Jean Smith of Garden Gate Farms. Unfortunately, at about five o'clock, the thunder storms rolled in and shut the market down. But, fear not, the vendors will return on Friday, June 5th from 3pm - 7pm, with Larry Green and his wonderful honey as the featured vendor. The Market is always adding vendors, too, so be sure to check in each week and see what's new.
Each week visitors to the Market are given the opportunity to sign up to win a free Market Basket. The Market Basket contains items donated by the vendors and is awarded the following week. Because the items are donated each week the basket is always different. Be sure to sign up at the red-topped booth. The winner of the first Market Basket was Anne Schlichting of Port Sanilac.
The Farmers' Market features fresh local produce and hand-made crafts from throughout Sanilac County. The "Eat Locally" movement has grown in our country and the Farmers' Market is our opportunity to join in. With all of the food related health scares of recent years many people are concerned about the safety of their food. The best food safety policy is to know where your food comes from. At the Farmers' Market you get to meet the people who grow your food.
So come on out and meet your local grower. Stock up on fresh foods and enjoy an afternoon at the Port Sanilac Farmers Market! Farmers' Market hours are every Friday from 3pm -7pm, now through October 30th. Interested vendors please contact the Market Manager, Caroline Goetze at 989-864-3373. |
Fun Was Had By All at the
Port Sanilac Civil War Days |
The Civil War Days event of May 30th and 31st was a roaring success! People from all around came out to see re-enactors presenting as President Lincoln, General George Custer, Governor Austin Blair, and many more! Children at Harbor Park were invited to participate in doll making, stilt walking, and playing with antique toys. The Simply Dickins singing group entertained the crowds with songs of the civil war era.
At the Sanilac County Historical Museum the St. Claire Voyageurs demonstrated the crafts and skills of the early settlers of Michigan. Visitors to the Museum participated in rope making and candle dipping and saw demonstrations of blacksmithing.
In the evening people were invited to join with the re-enactors at a Civil War Ball. Glen Morningstar and the Ruffwater String band entertained with music of the Civil War era and called contra dances for the ball. The house at the Bark Shanty Community Center was packed for the show.
On Sunday morning, Pastor Bill Willis opened the festivities with a worship service in the park. The beautiful weather brought out the crowds for speeches by General George Custer and a presentation on the Underground Railroad. Children were again thrilled by the Punch and Judy show. Dr. Will Gagalot presented as a snake oil salesman. Luckily for the crowds they weren't taken in by his tom-foolery.
The Civil War Days is part of the Music at the Harbor series that brings live music to the Port Sanilac Harbor Park every Saturday night from 7pm - 9pm through Labor Day. Susan Gill, head of the Music at the Harbor committee, has put together an exciting season of entertainment, see a schedule for the whole season at www.portsanilac.net. |
