Prayer Update, March 4 2011

Mother at St George's Church

 A prayer for the women

'But if I go to the east, he is not there; if I go to the west, I do not find him.

When he is at work in the north, I do not see him;  when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.   But he knows the way that I take.'

Job 23:8-10

Dear friends,

Today we mark the Women's World Day of Prayer. And as we remember women around the world, may we keep the women of St George's Church, and across Iraq, in our thoughts.

Please pray for those women who have lost husbands amid decades of conflict. Pray for those who have had to raise their children alone. For those who have lost children.

In Baghdad, we care for the immediate victims of violence. We treat them in our clinic, pray with them at church, provide them with vital supplies - food that they would otherwise go without. We take their funerals.

We also care for the long-term needs of local people. We provide spiritual refuge, friendship when it's most needed. All in a place that promotes forgiveness, and hope.

Our congregation at St George's is made up mostly of women and children - widows and orphans.

And the women of St George's play a vital role in the work we do. Our Mother's Union organises and distributes the supplies that go to thousands of local families each week. They pray for, and care for, the children of the church, and in the local area, and do so much more.

Nawal, who leads our Mother's Union at St George's, has asked us to pray for the following:

 - For the protection of people throughout Iraq during this time of uncertainty. Demonstrations continue throughout the country, aiming to highlight political corruption, unemployment and a shortage of basic facilities including food, electricity and water. Please pray for a peaceful outcome, that the government will help protect citizens. Pray for security, and peace.

- Please pray that living conditions will improve for people at St George's, wider Baghdad, and throughout Iraq. Pray that water, electricity and food will be supplied.

Please also pray for the Mother's Union itself, and all the women of St George's, who gather together to pray these prayers each week.

Pray that they will feel God at work in their community, the church, and in their homes. Pray that they will see answers to prayer, and know peace.

Pray that they will know the work they do is so greatly appreciated.
