It has been a typically busy weekend and so wonderful to have a quieter few days, with no nearby murders or explosions. It seems so strange to consider three days as peaceful respite, but that is the reality of life in Baghdad.
We have just remembered the last weekend of Pentecost and celebrated the Feast of Christ the King. It was poignant at both Saturday's Anglican US Embassy Service and yesterday at St. George's to explore the day's readings. We studied Luke's account of Jesus on the cross.
How fitting it seemed as we celebrated Christ the King. His highest place of glory was not on a regent's throne, but on a wooden cross, between two criminals. It corresponded so well with our recent memories of the terrible violence - suffering and glory go hand in hand.
The Lord Understands I was particularly moved this weekend when the dear young Lina, a member of St. George's Church, sent me the following short video.
Logan the "Sky Angel Cowboy"
A young boy from a ranch in rural Nebraska had just put down his favourite calf. He phoned the Christian radio station with a message that G-d had just spoken to him. He explained that G-d endured the loss of his beloved son, so he understands what is feels like for us when a person or pet dies.
Suddenly all of us at St. George's understood that our Lord does indeed understand what we have been through. If you are my friend on Facebook then you may have already seen the video. If not then I recommend you click the link, above.
Peace Prize event - please pray I am returning this week to the UK for the presentation of our peace prize to Minister Wijdan Michel Salem, taking place in the House of Lords. The award will be presented by Lord Carey. With grace, peace and blessings from Baghdad, The Rev'd Canon Andrew White
