Canon Andrew White writes...

Holy Cross Day
13th September 2010
Dear Friends,

The burning of the Qurans had been called off but we have literally experienced the fire here. The first Sunday after this terrible event was Holy Cross Day. Here in Iraq the tradition is that as people leave church a fire is lit in the garden. The other side of the fire is the cross. People jumped the fire to the cross and kissed it. It seemed so much more symbolic this year. On the other side of the world there was meant to be a fire to demonstrate retribution and revenge but here the fire that burned was about life, light and love. In the Cross, we are indeed made whole.

In case you hadn't seen, here is an article from The Independent from Friday, which highlights the response in Baghdad to what was being threatened in Florida:

It has been such a difficult past few days. Now we are determined that we will continue to move forward with our Lord. Please do keep praying for us please also pray for my wife Caroline as she has her next operation this week and I am not there.

Blessings,

The Rev'd Canon Andrew White
St George's Church

What is Holy Cross Day?
In the Christian liturgical calendar, there are several different "Feasts of the Cross," all of which commemorate the cross used in the crucifixion of Jesus. While Good Friday is dedicated to the Passion of Christ and the Crucifixion, these days celebrate the cross itself, as the instrument of salvation. - Wikipedia
