Cablecast Lottery June 16th
As of July 1st, Access Tucson will operate only one channel (20 Cox / 74 Comcast). This change is in accordance with AZ State law (9-506), the City of Tucson (licensing authority) can only require Cox Communications (cable company) to carry two digital PEG channels and two analog PEG channels in exchange for using the public rights of way. TUSD and Tucson Fire and Safety are the digital channels and Tucson 12 and Access Tucson are the analog channels.
Access Tucson will use the lottery system to fairly and efficiently consolidate programming on our three channels to one channel. The lottery is on Saturday, June 16th from 2pm to 5pm in the Access Tucson conference room. The lottery is open to all active series producers with an already facilitated project. The cablecast schedule that results from this lottery will be in effect for one year.
We are very conscious of creating a balance that serves producers, organizations, viewers and underwriters. The primary goal of the channel continues to be our mission of free speech and local expression. With sustainability in mind, we also hope to increase revenue through underwriting, become more viewer friendly and create better quality programs by spending more time on planning and the production process.
One way of achieving these goals is to incorporate block programming into the schedule. These blocks are 2-4 hours long. The categories or subjects of the blocks include Religious/Spiritual, Youth, Live Call-in, Spanish language (non-religious), Music, Arts & Culture and Politics. The blocks of like programming will logically and almost effortlessly provide many promotional and underwriting opportunities.
The lottery information packet and application were emailed to all active series producers this past week. If we did not have your email in our database, we snail mailed you a copy. Links to the packet and application are also available below. If you stop by Access Tucson, ask for a copy at the front desk.
Applications are due Friday, June 15th by 9pm.
Please contact Vikki Dempsey at 520-624-9833 x126 or vikkid@accesstucson.org if you have any questions about the cablecast lottery.

Frankie: In Grateful Remembrance November 3, 1918 - April 28, 2012

Frankie Mae McDemmons became a member of Access Tucson when she was almost 70 years old.
Although Frankie admitted to not knowing anything about TV, she did say yes when asked if she would be willing to help Access Tucson. Frankie became the the Guest Relations person for Local Matters, Access Tucson's talk show highlighting local non-profit organizations.
Frankie's qualifications? Her exquisite graciousness. Frankie volunteered on Local Matters for about 12 years, even coming back after she'd been hospitalized with congestive heart failure in 2007.
In 2009, an inaugural award was created just for her, The Frankie McDemmons Inspirational Service Award, given first to Frankie "whose service to Access Tucson exemplifies the courage, hope and optimism to foster First Amendment free speech expression for all." Since 2009, three other Access Tucson volunteers have been especially honored to receive "the Frankie."
In addition to being a dedicated volunteer, Frankie was also an avid viewer. If you produced a show at Access Tucson, no doubt Frankie saw it - and probably several times! Frankie died peacefully in the wee hours of April 28th. Her passing is a loss to us all. But her presence in our lives was truly a gift.
Frankie often said she had three families: her family family, her church family at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and her TV family at Access Tucson.
