Access Tucson is pleased to feature the unique mission and services of one our newest organizational members: CareGivers Training Institute (CGTI).

written by Felipe Carlos Jácome, Vice President, CGTI

Judy Clinco
Judy Clinco, RN

The mission of the CareGiver Training Institute (CGTI), a nonprofit, community-based, private sector educational resource which serves Southern Arizona, is to improve the quality of health care by offering a superior health care education that provides the knowledge, technical ability and interpersonal skills necessary to provide high quality direct care. This mission has evolved over time since it was first articulated by our founder, Ms. Judith B. Clinco, RN, who we are honoring.

Judy Clinco Tribute Dinner & Reception

Sunday, October 23, 2011

4:00pm-7:00pm

Tavolino Ristorante

2890 E. Skyline Drive

Tickets still available.

The instructional programs that Judy pioneered at CGTI in the last decade have led the nation in terms of caregiver education through the development of a new model curriculum, intensive student recruitment, screening and training by highly qualified Registered Nurse Instructors to work as Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) and professional caregivers. CGTI was founded in 2000, and began offering classes in 2002. As of last month, just over 1,250 caregivers have graduated - at an average graduation rate of around 86%! Over 80% of these graduates are currently employed in health care and a number have continued their education to become Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners.

This Tribute Dinner & Reception will honor Judy's life-long advocacy for quality training for the professional caregivers and CNAs who take care of many of our community's frailest elders and persons with disabilities. All funds raised at this event will benefit the Judy Clinco Tuition Assistance Fund to assist students who need help in completing their education at CGTI.

For event tickets or more information, please contact Ms. Carolyn Donges at 520-325-4870, or visit: www.azcaregivertraining.org

Online Auction Supporting Community Media
November 16-28, 2011
Link on Access Tucson website

Access Tucson will hold an online auction that features gifts for the holidays, unique items and experiences!  Shop and support Access Tucson at the same time . We are currently looking for ideas, donations and contributions for the auction. Contact Vikki Dempsey for more information or to contribute an item to the auction, 520-624-9833 x126.

Last year's auction proved to be very beneficial for both Access Tucson and the Tucson Community. We found that many of the bidders lived outside of Tucson and bought experiences like an airplane ride, Arizona Theatre Company tickets or restaurant gift certificates to enhance their next visit to Tucson.

If you know someone at Laff's Comedy Club, ask for a couple of tickets. If you know an artist, ask for a donated art piece. If you know a hairdresser, ask for a donated haircut. Or if you know an interior decorator, ask for a consultation to be donated.....

Awaiting Grant Results

Access Tucson welcomes all grant application suggestions. Here are 2 that we will know the results by November 30th.

Youth Citizen Journalism Project

Granting Agency: Marshall Foundation

For many young people, digital media and technology provide ways to express identity, communicate with peers and adults, and enhance essential academic skills. Utilizing these interests, Access Tucson would provide a centralized place to facilitate local, teen-produced journalism. Professional journalists and media producers would teach and empower students to use photos, video, audio and writing skills to report and distribute stories via the web, social media and cable television.

Civil Media Project

Granting Agency: Tucson Pima Arts Council

The Civil Media Project will produce oral history documentaries centered upon people's actions and emotions as the tragic events of January 8, 2011 unfolded. Although this event was not, linked in any way to contemporary public discourse, the tragedy sparked a local and national conversation about civic engagement and civility.

Afterschool Media Program

Satori Charter School
September 2011, Access Tucson started an afterschool media program with Satori Charter School.

This program offers kids a chance to explore the world of television production. From scripting and shooting, to performing as talent on the set, participants learn to create their own television programs.

Media is certainly a part of our lives and our children's lives. Access Tucson Afterschool gives kids a new perspective and understanding of television and media. Through creating their own messages, children are no longer simple consumers of television, but programmers. This experience enables them to better understand all the media messages they see daily and have fun learning!

Downsizing to One Channel

Due to the state law that Cox Communications lobbied heavily for in late 2006 and the City of Tucson's recent license agreement with Cox, Access Tucson will be downsized to one channel starting July 1, 2012.

For right now, we are extending the current cablecast schedule until June 30, 2012.

In January 2012, all live producers will start to have their live shows once a month. This will open more live opportunities for members of the community but it also serves the current producers because they can then easily promote their show as the first Friday of every month, etc. We are sticking to what producers have now in terms of channel, day, time and rotation-just changing their live show to once a month.

For the months where there may be a fifth Friday or Saturday, the studio will be opened up for tape producers to tape their shows.

From now until the change to one channel, Access Tucson will be working on how to program the cablecast schedule while trying to remain fair to everyone. We will keep you posted.
