I should stop reading the newspaper. Truth is I can't. I'm addicted. I have to feel it, smell it, along with my bagel and coffee at breakfast. I love the written word. Maybe that is why I have to write this Newsletter.

Joe Namath, at the height of his popularity as quarterback of the New York Jets, said he stopped reading the papers because of all the negative stuff reporters wrote about him. It was too draining. His teammates were a better source of good vibes and positive energy.

I was reading the Business Section of the newspaper yesterday. On three consecutive pages, here is a sampling of the stories being covered:

"Marie Callender's parent in Chapter 11"

"Drop in Home Sales Continues"

"U.S. Review of BofA was "hindered"

"Beazer Homes fires its CEO"

"Disney theme park prices rise"

"Bloomberg says Comcast violates order"

"Retail video game sales hit five-year low"

"Airlines get $3.4 billion from baggage"

"S&P, citing default risk, cuts Greece's debt rating to CCC"

"Three traders convicted in N.Y. hedge fund trial"

If I turn on CNN or my local news, it just gets worse.

Should I throw up? Jump off the Tallahatchie Bridge? Curl up and die? How do I - and you - deal with this stuff?

It is amazing the volume of bad news and negativity we citizens have had to deal with over the last few years. It's been endless.

We are wallowing. Our country seems to be in the toilet, circling slowly as we push ourselves down the drain, gradually being swept out to sea. Is this how it all ends?

I have the feeling that many Americans felt the same way in 1929. Yet, the United States emerged from that disaster, and the rest of the world watched as our country recorded some of the greatest achievements ever.

I think Joe Namath had it right. We cannot allow the "noise" to infiltrate our very being and sap our energy. It's so easy to just throw up our hands and quit. We cannot allow ourselves to be frozen in place. We can't say "screw it" and do nothing. Instead, let's focus on our core - family, self realization, close friends and business associates - and move ahead with purpose. Stick to our individual plan.

Remember, this too shall pass. Let's get on with it!

Sincerely,

Denny Stanz
