I LOVE THE TELEPHONE !
I HATE THE TELEPHONE !

Alexander Graham Bell is credited with inventing a device that would transmit speech electrically. After working with deaf children and trying to improve upon the telegraph, Mr. Bell gave birth to the telephone in 1875. He spoke the first words to his assistant, Thomas Watson, who was in an adjoining room. "Mr. Watson - come here - I want to see you." We have been talking non-stop ever since.

Today, some 135 years later, some of the sweetest words you can hear me say to you over the phone are " I have a cash price for your note." And, the sweetest words you can say to me in return are " I accept your offer."

So why the love - hate thing?

The telephone is indispensable in doing business. It is quick, easy efficient and a more intimate way to communicate true intent and feeling, rather than email or texting. Two people can gauge each other much better when they hear each other's voice.

In the note business, if a transaction is not a local one, you and i don't meet. We talk on the phone. You may be uncomfortable doing business with someone you have not met, business that involves a lot of money. You may be leery and question whether I can be trusted. You may decide not to pursue a sale of your note simply because we are not going to meet. You may, in fact, pass on a very nice opportunity for yourself to get the cash you need.

I have encountered this rarely in my business, which is why I am bringing it up. How wonderful it is that people who have not met each other - and probably never will - can establish a bond of trust by simply talking to one another on Mr. Bell's invention. And, that this bond - however it happens - makes you comfortable enough to answer my questions, send documents to me, and ultimately, allows you to receive the CASH you need.

It does amaze me that a business can become very personal without a face to face meeting. I love the telephone for this. But I hate the telephone on those very few occasions where I am unable to relax you to the point where you can feel trust coming through the lines. It makes me want to get in my car or jump on a plane and sit down with you and help you get what you want. I know that would work but it just is not practical.

Well, I have to go now - my phone is ringing !!
