Greetings!
Darwinism and Evolution and Obesity are all important and related. Dr. Kuhn's article about the Weaknesses of Darwinism was published. He discusses here the connection with obesity

The Strengths and Weaknesses of Darwinian Evolution . . . and Obesity
| Dr. Kuhn has been interested in evolution for years. He has published an article in a Medical Journal, which is now available on PUBMED. Texas caught national attention based on the school board decision to include the weaknesses of Darwin's theory. This article gives a complete picture of those weaknesses and can be openly shared with teachers, parents, and others.

Key weaknesses include:
1) failure to explain incredible complexity of the human cell, which could not have gradually arisen due to the variety of necessary simultaneous proteins (over 20,000). 2) failure to explain the inherent information included in DNA, which could not have arisen spontaneously or by a sequence or random actions. 3) failure of the fossil data or the bacterial/viral experimental data to demonstrate the pattern of transitional species which would be required in a circumstance of gradual mutation with natural selection. 4) failure to explain the origin of life (the first cell, the first strand of DNA, etc).
Of course, the article goes into great detail on the above issues. The article also acknowledges the Strenghts of Darwinian evolution to explain the variations within species that we all see with dog breeding, bird beaks, and bacterial resistance to antibiotics through DNA mutations within species.
How Does this Relate to Obesity???
Well, natural selection of the human species over time possibly led to a preponderance of people with genes that 1) efficiently stored fat, 2) could function on fewer calories (retained calories better). Remember that for most of history, food was relatively scarce. With over 70 genes specifically coding for the obesity characteristic, there could reasonably be a tendency for "survival of the fittest", leading to a greater percentage of people with those genetic tendencies.

THANK YOU BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD
|
|
Dr. Kuhn and many others have submitted articles and arguments before the national Blues programs. Fortunately, they have decided to stop the 6 month required dietary program prior to bariatric surgery.
That is a huge statement from a major carrier that is like a barrier coming down.
We will continue to emphasize at least one dietary visit with the Bariatric Dietician. However, it is nice that the insurance companies have truly listened. Thanks also to the patient-advocates who have reached out and connected with the carriers.
