   The Walk From Obesity

Our Booth 2008

Many of you recognize my daughter from last year's walk.  This year, I will have my son, Kevin to keep me company as we lead the pack of staff and involved patients around the grounds at the Cooper Aerobic Center.

This year, Rebecca Miller from Channel 33 will host the event and provide words of encouragement.  She has volunteered her time to many local charities and causes and has won awards for those contributions.

There will be a DJ spinning records and keeping things hopping.

There will be many booths of local surgeons and various vendors who will all be giving out FREE gifts to all.

There will be a silent auction that you can bid on with incredible neat things like:

Pearl Necklace
Men's Watch
Month of Yoga
Sports Memorabilia with items from Dirk Nowitzki, Mike Modano, Nolan Ryan, and Vince Young
Fitness Plan and Design by Bobby Whisnand

Registration Begins at 8:30

Walk Begins at 9:00

THIS WILL BE FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.

OUR COMMITMENT

The Obesity Action Coalition is the single best voice to represent YOU
Our practice has begun a program which pays for membership in the OAC for new patients.  This provides a magazine, email updates, and a VOICE that can make a big difference with legislators.

If you join the Walk From Obesity, you will become a member of OAC.  I strongly encourage you to join the OAC and know that they will lobby for you.

For new referrals, we will mail a DVD to a potential person who is considering their options or who simply wants to learn more about bariatric surgery.

Many Thanks to
Sharon Savoie
Lauren Watson

Sharon Savoie (our Office Manager) and Lauren Watson (our registered dietician) are the Event Leaders of the Walk from Obesity.

They have contributed many hours of time to make the event successful for the entire city of Dallas.  The purpose of the Walk is to raise awareness and advocacy for obesity prevention, education, research and treatment.  Look at the emblem below.

This is the third year that our practice has taken the lead as a community organizer, volunteering our time and effort to place obesity treatment as a priority for our society.

I want to take this time to thank them for the wonderful job they have done.

Walk from obesity

The walk is at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas.

How Many Calories do you need daily to MAINTAIN your Weight?

In general, we have found that bariatric patients need approximately 9 calories per pound to maintain their current weight.  That means that if you are 200 pounds, you are eating about 1800 calories per day in order to maintain your weight.  If you want to lose weight, you must TARGET fewer calories.  For every 3000 calories that you don't eat, you would lose 1 pound.  So, if you TARGET 1400 calories per day, that would be a deficit of 400 calories per day, and you would lose a pound every 7 days.

It is important to periodically COUNT your daily calories to see whether there are snacks or other foods which are adding too many calories
