August 2010
 Greetings!

Walking from obesity is important.  This month, we talk about exercise and the latest research into burning fat versus burning carbohydrates.  We also ask you to LET YOUR VOICE be heard through the annual Walk From Obesity, coming in September

Sincerely,  Joseph A. Kuhn, MD
Exercise Slowly, not Hard

exercise

Recent research shows that the best form of exercise to BURN the fat stores is a slower form of exercise.  Specifically, if you are able to still walk and talk, without being short of breath, then you are burning fat cells.  This is aerobic exercise (good oxygen)  Once you start getting short of breath, you are starting to get anaerobic (low oxygen), and you will start burning your glycogen storage deposits.  The problem with burning your glycogen stores is that you will trigger carbohydrate craving after the exercising.

Good exercising (to burn fat), might include walking, slow cycling, swimming.  Sometimes, you can park farther away from your destination, allowing for good gradual exercise on a daily basis.

How Many Calories do you need daily to MAINTAIN your Weight?

In general, we have found that bariatric patients need approximately 9 calories per pound to maintain their current weight.  That means that if you are 200 pounds, you are eating about 1800 calories per day in order to maintain your weight.  If you want to lose weight, you must TARGET fewer calories.  For every 3000 calories that you don't eat, you would lose 1 pound.  So, if you TARGET 1400 calories per day, that would be a deficit of 400 calories per day, and you would lose a pound every 7 days.

It is important to periodically COUNT your daily calories to see whether there are snacks or other foods which are adding too many calories
