Advent Service Project 2009

Advent is quickly approaching!  This year we will be collecting coins to support Dakota Woodlands.  Dakota Woodlands is a homeless shelter serving mostly women and children from Dakota County.  It is located right across the street from Faithful Shepherd.  The kickoff to our service project will be on December 2nd after mass.  Abby Webster from Dakota Woodlands has graciously agreed to come and share with our students and staff a little bit about the facility.  In the spirit of Advent, we encourage parents to offer small jobs around the house for the children to earn extra money for their donations.   Coins will be collected daily during Advent.  Thank you for your support of our Advent service project!

Thank you for the food donations that were made to the SJN food shelf before Thanksgiving.  Over 50 grocery bags of non-perishable food items were delivered last week.
Mass Tuesday, December 8th

Next week, in observance of Immaculate Conception, Mass will be on Tuesday, December 8th vs. Wednesday, December 9th.  Additionally, Tuesday the 8th will be a "Wednesday"  specialist schedule and Wednesday the 9th will be a "Tuesday" specialist schedule.

Study Tips

Most students sincerely want to  do well in school and are concerned about getting good grades and being successful. One of the biggest helps in aiding student success is giving them suggestions on the "How " as well as the "Why". Why study is something parents reinforce many, many times with their child. Today, I will give you some of the "How's".

First, Students who have daily planners should use them to record the " What and the When". What is due and when it is due.

Secondly, Make study time a regular part of your student's schedule. Also, find a regular time and place to study. Third, study where you will be the most alert and least distracted. In bed or in front of the TV  or computer are not good study areas.

Finally, lean to say "No" to temptations to delay, postpone or cancel study / homework time and learn to say "Yes" to taking short breaks when you have long study periods.

Mr. Boone
5th Grade Parents

Fifth grade parents are responsible for supervising lunch and recess during December. Please log onto Faithful Shepherd's website at www.fscsmn.org under the "To Do's" to select a date that works for you.  Thank you!
Reminder From The Office

Please ensure you send in a note to the school office when picking up your child early, or if there is a change in transportation/after school plans. Additionally, if your child will be riding the bus home with someone, the note should come to the office vs. the bus driver. The office will send a Transportation Change to the student who should then give it to the bus driver.  Thank you for your assistance.

Don't forget as the calendar turns to winter to make sure that your child is dressed with proper outdoor clothing.  All children go outside unless the windchill or temperature is below zero.  Students are not kept inside for insufficient winter clothing.

Join Jeanne Cotter, a national renowned Catholic composer and inspirational speaker, for an evening of music and reflection on the themes of hope, receptivity, and the call to answer, as Mary did with a radical "yes" on Thursday, December 3rd at SJN.

This evening is open to all. Childcare is available, but limited. Reservations required. Call 651 454-2079 ext. 2235 by November 30th. For more information, contact Judy Doonan-Twohy at  651 454-2079 ext. 2204.
