Look for the Home and School Assoc. (HSA) box located in the bottom left corner on the home page, then to "other events" to volunteer on the committee or for the Boutique weekend.

Art Adventure 2009

During the month of November, FSCS will have Art Adventure. Art Adventure is an art enrichment program of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA). It is a way of bringing works of art that can't leave the museum into elementary school classrooms. At FSCS, students in grades K - 5 participate. The program involves parent volunteers who present 8 poster size reproductions of art centered on a common theme to the children. This year's theme set is FAMILY, FRIENDS AND FOES.

The parent volunteers attend one training session at the MIA, to view the 8 works of art in the set and discuss the history behind the art/artist. At the training, the volunteers receive a detailed booklet that gives information about how to present art to different age children as well as information about the pieces of art they will be presenting. The volunteer then brings in a reproduction to the classroom and encourages the children to look first and then talk about what they see. The format of teaching is using open ended questions so that the volunteer is facilitating a discussion of the art piece, not just lecturing.

Art Adventure provides students with a rare opportunity to spend time looking at art and expressing what they see in words. Students gain confidence in their ability to find meaning in artifacts from a wide range of world cultures. They practice seeing things from another person's point of view, whether it's their classmate's or the artists'. They also feel the thrill of meeting an old friend when they come upon familiar objects at the museum.

Presentations are in November only. Field trips to the museum will be for the 2nd and 4th graders to view the actual works of art. Please talk to your child about Art Adventure and share their experience. This year, the 7th graders will also have the opportunity to participate in the Art Adventure Middle School Program.

8th Grade Girls Volleyball

This past Sunday, the girls played for the CAA Championship and came away with second place. It was a well-fought 3-set battle against North Heights with FS taking the first set 25-21. The 3rd set came down to the last few points to decide the winner. The fan support was wonderful to see and what a great 8th grade experience for the team. All season long, the girls had one close match after another and that rigorous schedule prepared them to beat some great teams in the playoffs and to come within points of winning the City Championship.

The 8th grade team - Elli D., Tori D., Jamie S., Katie S., Kathryn B., Anna G., Emily L., Olivia V., Meg M., and Victoria R..
