AstraZeneca, law firm honored for military support
By ANDREW EDER
The News Journal

Two Wilmington-area employers are among 15 nationwide honored by the U.S. Department of Defense for support of employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

AstraZeneca, the global drug maker with U.S. headquarters in Fairfax, and the Wilmington office of law firm Marks, O'Neill, O'Brien & Courtney have won the 2009 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The companies were selected from 3,200 nominees.

"We're just extremely excited about the award," said Kathie Simmons, office manager for Marks, O'Neill, O'Brien & Courtney.

The firm was nominated by attorney Brad Sams, a major in the Air Force Reserve, who has been with the firm five years.

The company was recognized for providing full pay to service members during active duty, continuing employees' medical and life insurance benefits and providing "exceptional" support to employees and their families during deployments, according to the Defense Department.

AstraZeneca, which employs more than 100 men and women serving in the National Guard or Reserve, was nominated by a district sales manager from New Jersey, an Army Reserve lieutenant colonel who has served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The drug maker provides National Guard and Reserve employees differential pay between their military pay and AstraZeneca salary during deployments, continues employee medical benefits and gives companywide recognition to reservists from senior leadership, according to the Defense Department.

AstraZeneca has also created a military support employee network group, and the company assigns a family support coordinator to each family of deployed workers.

"As a former Army Reservist, this award is particularly special to me," said Rich Fante, president of AstraZeneca's U.S. business. "AstraZeneca's workplace policies reflect our appreciation for every man and woman who has served our country and the freedoms we cherish."
