Isogen opens facility near Newark Pharmaceutical company plans to keep growing in Del. By AARON NATHANS The News Journal
Isogen, the New Jersey pharmaceutical company, on Monday celebrated the opening of its new facility near Newark. The company's CEO, Les Edwards, as well as Gov. Jack Markell and state economic development chief Alan Levin, were on hand for the opening. "I think this is only the beginning of the Isogen story for Delaware," Levin said. "They have every intention of growing with Delaware." The facility is at the Stine-Haskell Research Center near Newark, which is owned by DuPont Co. The company was planning a larger project for land near the New Castle County Airport, but it was delayed because of the economic downturn. But the company intends to see it through when the economy improves, said Patty Cannon of the Delaware Economic Development Office. The business currently provides 40 new high-tech jobs in Delaware. Twenty-eight are filled with fulltime employees; the others are contractors. The facility will produce injectable drugs for clinical trials and early commercial sales. It will be produced in small and medium-size batches, from 100 to 100,000 doses. Isogen received a $1.5 million loan from the Delaware Economic Development Office for the project. It will become a grant if it meets several job-creation criteria, and the company still is on track to do so, Cannon said. The first condition is that the company create 19 jobs with minimum salaries of $48,000 by 2011. It must create an additional 129 jobs with salaries of at least $50,000 from 2012 to 2022. And DEDO laid out some corporate performance measures to be met by 2011. Isogen was founded in 1994 as Advanced Barrier Concepts. Levin lauded the cooperation between the state, county and local government officials for making the project possible. "That's a real testament to what Delaware can do when we want something to happen," Levin said.
