AstraZeneca plant given Energy Star rating By JEFF MONTGOMERY The News Journal AstraZeneca's Christiana site was one of four pharmaceutical plants to receive the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star ranking Wednesday, part of a federal effort to recognize the nation's most energy-efficient businesses. The plant is off Old Baltimore Pike and Salem Church Road, and visible from I-95. The company's Westborough, Mass., plant received the same award, as did Allergan's Waco, Texas, factory and Schering-Plough's Cleveland, Tenn., plant. EPA officials said the four sites use nearly 35 percent less energy than similar pharmaceutical operations. Their energy savings avert an estimated 40,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide pollution each year. AstraZeneca has a goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 12 percent globally by next year. The company's U.S. headquarters center on Concord Pike in Fairfax won the same award in 2007, as did its adjacent Rollins Building, according to the EPA. "This additional Energy Star certification recognizes AstraZeneca's systemic approach to energy conservation and managing our environmental footprint responsibly," said Kathy Monday, vice president of customer product support & business services and the executive leader of U.S. manufacturing operations. Under the agency's Energy Star program, companies submit information about energy use and are ranked under a system that takes into account weather, plant features, fuel types and other information. Automobile plants, cement plants, oil refineries, and wet corn milling factories also can receive rankings under the program. The EPA also uses the Energy Star program across the economy, adding labels to major appliances and other products to help consumers switch to money-saving and more environmentally friendly goods. In 2008, the agency estimated, Energy Star products and programs allowed the country to avoid the equivalent of 29 million automobiles' worth of greenhouse gas emissions, at a savings of $19 billion. Across Delaware, 38 schools, buildings, grocery stores and industrial sites now hold the rating.
