PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
from Bob Dayton, President, Delaware BioScience Association
In 2008, the Delaware BioScience Association's Directors and our various partners supported our growth in so many ways, and there's more in store in 2009.
Delaware Bio Members gathered together on several occasions at events throughout 2008, beginning with the Media Panel Breakfast in January, the April and November Life Science Career Fairs, the IP Due Diligence Breakfast in June, and six signature BioBreakfasts.
The Delaware Bio Career Fairs connected more than 500 job candidates with more than 25 employers. The Gala provided one of the best networking opportunities to date. The 200 plus Gala attendees were treated to a memorable keynote speech by Jim Greenwood, President and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization. Four individuals, Paul Friedman, Ben Chien, Ray Yin and Joe DiPinto were individually recognized for their contributions to the biosciences in Delaware.
Further, Delaware Bio continued its support of the Delaware State University Innovative Technology Breakfast bi-monthly series, now in its third year, and we continued our support of the Technology Forum of Delaware with the delivery of its life science related events.
In an effort to enhance services to our members, the Board of Directors gave approval of and expanded the Board in the first quarter of 2009. We welcome Ben Chien, Chairman, President and CEO of QPS; Kelvin Lee, Director of the Delaware Biotechnology Institute; Brian Little, Vice President Academic Affairs and Research at Christiana Care; and Pam Murphy, Vice President Investor Relations and Corporate Communications, Incyte Corporation.
In the area of education and workforce training, Delaware Bio is working with several Delaware institutions to secure federal funding this year. One Delaware institution has already been approved for Delaware Valley Innovation Network funding, and at least three more Delaware institutions are in the planning phase. You'll hear more about this in the months ahead.
In 2009 we plan to continue to deliver the programs that members keep asking for. Delaware Bio along with the Delaware Biotechnology Institute and the Delaware Technology Park, with the generous sponsorship from VWR, will continue to bring you the bi-monthly BioBreakfasts.
Progress is a good thing, so we're pleased to continue to grow as we bring more and more benefits to our members. As always, we welcome your thoughts and ideas, so be sure to contact us and let us know what we can do to make Delaware Bio even better.
