DUPONT CO. FOCUSES ON PLANT-BASED FUELS

DuPont and Genencor are partnering to develop and commercialize technology for the production of celluosic ethanol. The goal of this joint venture is to create cost-effective plant-based fuels. And in

GRANT TO ATHENA BIOTECHNOLOGIES SUPPORTS
THEIR EFFORT TO TURN PLANTS INTO ETHANOL

Athena Biotechnologies will be looking for a bug that will turn plants into ethanol, using a $100,000 grant from the Department of Energy.

PERSONALIZED CANCER TREATMENTS
ONE STEP CLOSER TO REALITY

AstraZeneca has funded research by Lecia Sequist, Harvard Medical School instructor and oncologist at Massachussetts General Hospital Cancer Center. The study's goal is to determine if personalized medicine or genetically driven cancer therapy are available.

MORE CAPITAL FOR STARTUPS AVAILABLE
A federal grant of $500,000 has been given to First State Innovation, a nonprofit private-sector-led group operating since 2006. The grant will help support and nurture Delaware companies to ensure that our region remains competitive in the global economy.

LIBRARY OF ANTIBODIES BEING PRODUCED FOR STUDY OF USHER SYNDROME
Using its proprietary Genomic Antibody Technology™ platform, Strategic Diagnostics wlll produce and supply antibodies to the University of Oregon, Eugene, and the Louisiana State University Health Science Center in New Orleans for the study of Usher Syndrome.

ANALTECH MARKETING VIDEO HEADED FOR E-MAIL INBOXES WORLDWIDE
Because drawing the attention of today's students is key to capturing future domestic market share, Analtech has created an imaginative and amusing online video for release in August. When it goes "viral," it will start appearing on blogs and e-mail

BECOMES NEW AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

Dr. Tim Gardner, medical director of Christiana Care's Center for Heart and Vascular Health, has become the American Heart Association's new president. His responsibilities will be focused on advancing the AHA's mission of "building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke."

MIYAGI JAPAN COMPANIES LOOK FOR DELAWARE COLLABORATION
Seven companies from Miyagi Prefecture (Delaware's "sister state") have expressed interest in collaborating with Delaware enterprises: GrapeCity, Cyber Solutions, Tripod Works, Digital Powder Systems, Tohoku Electronic Industrial,NEC/TOKIN, and MicroBio.

INCYTE CLINICAL RESULTS SHOW PROMISE FOR PATIENTS WITH RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
Promising clinical results from Incyte's 28-day Phase IIa trial involving an orally available janus-associated kinase (JAK) inhibitor for treating patients with rheumatoid arthritis were presented at the 2008 European League Against Rheumatism conference in Paris, France.

STUDENTS AWARDED GOVERNOR MINNER BIOTECH SCHOLARSHIPS
Governor Minner Biotechnology Scholarships were presented to three students at a luncheon at the Fraunhofer USA Center for Molecular Biotechnology.

WISTAR INSTITUTE AWARDED FIRST DVIN GRANT
The Delaware Valley Innovation Network (DVIN) awarded its first Innovation Investment Grant to the Wistar Institute, provIding $89,000 in support of the Wistar Biomedical Technician Training (BTT) Program, a two-year workforce development program in biotechnology and biomedical research.

SALESIANUM TEACHER IS BIOTECH AWARD FINALIST
Jennifer Albanese, a teacher of biology and anatomy and physiology at Salesianum School was one of ten finalists for the Genzyme-Invitrogen Biotech Educator Award, the nation's top award for biotechnology education. The award recognizes stellar educators who help improve the teaching and learning of biotechnology in the classroom.

DEL TECH FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN NEARS ITS GOAL
Delaware Technical and Community College reports that it's Shaping the Future Campaign has raised $3.55 million since its launch in 2006, helping to promote learning by funding lab and technology equipment, library support, innovative learning programs, study abroad scholarships, and camp scholarships.To reach its goal, the college looks to raise an additional
$624 thousand.


U of D SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM A SUCCESS
On July 16,undergraduates at the University of Delaware found out what a scientist's life is like in industry, as part of the Summer 2008 Undergraduate Research Enrichment Program. Participating companies included QPS, RatnerPrestia, Adesis, and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.

DUPONT YOUNG PROFESSOR GRANTS AWARDED

The DuPont Company honored UD assistant professor of chemical engineering Maciek R. Antoniewicz with a DuPont Young Professor Grant for original research. He is one of 17 young professors from around the world who received this award, which provides $25,000 a year for three years for recognized research faculty whose work aligns with DuPont's strategic business growth.

NEXT ROUND FOR DVIN RFPs CLOSES OCTOBER 1
Grants for Life Science Workforce Training and Education are available through Delaware Valley Innovation Network. This fourteen-county initiative aims to help develop talent and strengthen and grow the tri-state region's vibrant life sciences industry and workforce.
