Is there such a thing as 'Flu Outbreak' Insurance protection?

Yes, policies start at $1500 per year and provide coverage from $2500 to $50,000 per day per location.
With the recent outbreak of swine flu, I received a call from one of our customers who is a daycare provider.  They wanted to know if there was insurance to cover ongoing expenses from children being absent from a government mandated suspension of operations.

If there is a flu or other illness outbreak, there is no coverage on your general business insurance policy.

There are special policies that can be purchased. They provide specific coverage for  suspended operations due to a public health official mandate. These policies' premiums start at $1500 per year and provide a daily limit beginning at $2500 per day up to $50,000 per day for ongoing expenses, clean up and other items. Please contact us for more information.

Flood Insurance...do you need it??

This past month, Charlotte received record rainfall...at times about 3 inches of rain in only minutes. Several areas were significantly affected resulting in flooding in and around Independence Blvd and Monroe Road.

Spring and fall tend to be our wettest seasons resulting in our homes being susceptible to flooding and water damage.  With the recent heavy rainfalls, in what seemed like minutes and the overflowing of sewage drains in and around Charlotte, it begs the question - again -

IS FLOODING COVERED?  Flood water is defined as water that comes into the dwelling from the ground. It is NOT covered by the standard homeowners or property policy. You must buy separate coverage for it.

If you are in a  flood plain, your mortgage company will require a flood policy. If you are not, you may still be able to purchase coverage.

Be Careful Using a Payroll Service for Workers' Comp Coverage
Many payroll companies are getting into the insurance business. They say things like,  "you won't be audited" and "it will simplify things."  Think again.

When a claim occurs, who do you want on your side? A payroll salesperson at an  800# or, your trusted advisor insurance professional?

Workers' compensation is something that many companies never use. But if it is used, and there is a problem, you may be left to deal with an 800 #  and anyone in the call center to try to resolve the issue.

Insurance professionals are well trained to assist their clients with problems related to claims including workers' compensation. Your agent knows you and your business. Keep this in mind the next time a payroll company asks you about writing your workers' compensation.
