Homeowners' Insurance Rates On the Rise

There was a recent article about homeowners insurance rates being on the rise. The issue is around the state beach plan that subsidizes the premiums paid for beach property insurance.  If a hurricane were to hit our coast, like Katrina,  our state AND the insurance companies would be significantly affected financially.

The government plan does not have enough money to cover the losses from a catastrophic storm. The beach plan needs to be stabilized.

We are keeping tabs on developments and how this may affect you, our clients.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage
There was a new law put into place regarding Uninsured Motorist Coverage.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage is your policy protecting you, if you are hit by someone who doesn't have any or enough coverage for the accident that they caused.

This law says that you now have to carry the same limit of coverage on uninsured motorist as your primary level. Most of our policyholders will be unaffected by this change. We have always recommended carrying the same level of this coverage as your primary liability limit.
Headline News:  Be smart and protect yourself.
Keep your car doors locked when driving, in parking lots, at home.

More and more incidents of theft are occurring as times get hard for the less fortunate.  Stories about women's purses being taken right out of the car at stoplights are in the news.  Emails about carjacking scams, harassment at malls and safety tips are circulated daily.

 Be smart and protect yourself.
  •  Keep your valuables out of sight.
  •  Lock doors.
  •  Stay in well-lit areas.
  •  Be keenly aware of your surroundings.
  •  Check in and around your car before you get in.

If an unmarked vehicle tries to wave you down, call 911 and ask for a cruiser to come to your location.  Don't let a crime ruin your holiday!

Holiday Safety
A few precautions can keep your holiday merry...
Christmas Tree
Don't get carried away in the hustle and bustle of the season and forget to be safe!

Be sure your tree is fresh!  Cut a few inches off the bottom to expose fresh wood.  Check for dry needles.  Keep tree watered, away from heat, and don't block doorways.

Lights.  Make sure there are no open or broken sockets, no frayed wires or loose connections.  Consider purchasing some of the new LED lights - brighter, cooler, and safer!  Turn tree lights off at night or when you leave the house.  Don't overload circuits.  Use only lights and extension cords approved for outdoor-use outside.

Use flame-resistant or non-combustible decorations.  Avoid decorations that look like candy or food that may tempt a young child.  Don't use real candles on trees or in decorations.

Don't burn giftwrap or boxes.  Take care that decorations aren't too close to open flames.  Make sure the chimney flue is open.

Choose toys to suit the age level of your kids.  Watch for strings and small parts as choking hazards.  Keep regular eating and sleeping routines so younger children do not become overwhelmed and overstressed during the holiday.

Ingesting tinsel, poinsettia and mistletoe could be fatal for both kids and pets.

Wait until Christmas morning to put out the expensive gifts. With home robberies on the rise, gifts laid out under the tree may be tempting to a thief.

And while you are buying extra batteries for toys and gadgets, check your smoke alarm.  This is the perfect time to check the battery and keep your family safe.
